SOME TIPS FOR MOVING TO DORSET | DORSET GUIDE

A useful guide if you’re looking to move to the Dorset area or if you’re looking to relocate within Dorset:

REMOVALS TO DORSET | LIVING IN DORSET

There are plenty of reasons to move to Dorset – miles of sandy beaches, villages straight out a Thomas Hardy novel, some of the best weather in the UK, and a lively cultural calendar – to name just a few. But what’s it like to live in Dorset all year round, when the tourists go home and the days get shorter?

Schepens has been moving families to towns and villages across Dorset for over a century now. We’ve seen, first-hand, the successes and the challenges. So we’ve put together a list of the 5 destinations that seem to have worked best for clients who’ve started a new life in the area.

1. Poole

Poole has worked tremendously hard over the past few years to transform itself from a traditional seaside town to a highly attractive location for families to live and work in. It still has its 5 km of beautiful sandy beaches, of course, but much of the town’s architecture has been refurbished and the quayside has been transformed. Poole is now considered a great place for high tech start ups with over 3,000 new businesses being supported every year.

House Prices – 2 bed waterfront flats – £384,000. Semi-detached properties – £288,000. Detached properties – £500,000

Popular Schools – Junior: Baden Powell, St John’s CE. Secondary: Poole Grammar School, Parkstone Grammar school for Girls.

Transport – Trains leave regularly from Poole to King’s Cross; the journey takes around 2.5 hours. The drive takes around half and hour longer. Trains take 10 minutes to Bournemouth.

2. Dorchester

If you’re looking to live inland, Dorchester is a handsome town, and the fictional location of Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge. This is a working market town and something of a haven for people wanting to escape the picture-box prettiness of many of Dorset’s smaller towns. There are plenty of High St brands on offer, and a plethora of events, groups and entertainment happening throughout the year.

House Prices – terraced properties – £292,000. Semi-detached properties – £337,000. 2 bedroomed flats – £223,000

Popular Schools – Junior: The Prince of Wales School, St Osmund’s CofE. Secondary: The Thomas Hardye

Transport: This is not commuter-land. It is possible to travel by public transport to London Paddington but the journey is complicated and takes 2.25 hours. Connections to Bath and Bristol are better.

3. Blandford Forum

If you’re moving to Dorset to experience an England that’s been lost in the UK’s larger cities and towns, the Georgian town of Blandford Forum may be right for you. We have the oddly named Bastard brothers to thank for the glorious architecture; they rebuilt the town after a massive fire in 1731. There are two markets each week, which keep the town bustling, and a plethora of independent restaurants, cafes and shops to explore.

House Prices – terraced properties – £221,000. 2 bedroomed flats – £105,000. Detached properties – £377,500

Popular Schools – Junior: Milldown CofE, St Mary CofE, Archbishop Wake CofE. Secondary: The Blandford School

Transport – you definitely need a car to live in Blandford Forum, as there’s no train service. It’s 40 minutes’ drive to Bournemouth, and 20 minutes to Wimbourne Minster.

4. Bournemouth

Bournemouth was one of the Victorians’ favourite holiday towns and it remains a popular holiday destination to this day. It’s strength, however, lies in its ability to function as a successful economic hub as well as offering beautiful beaches. Gaming and digital industries have grown by around 70% in the past few years, and the town is also home to large financial companies such as JP Morgan Chase, and Liverpool Victoria.

House Prices – 2 bedroomed flats – £196,000. Semi-detached properties – £280,000. Detached properties – £416,000

Popular Schools –  Junior: Corpus Christi Catholic School, Pokesdown Community, Stourfield Infant School. Secondary – Bournemouth School for Girls, Bournemouth School, Talbot Heath School

Transport – Trains depart for Waterloo every 40 minutes, with a journey time of 1 hr 54 mins.

5. Weymouth

Weymouth has numerous awards for its sandy beaches, including the accolade of being the second best beach in the country. The town is still visited by millions of holiday-makers every year, but the current ‘big push’ is to attract more businesses to the town. Currently there are around 2,000 businesses in the area but there are a number of local and governmental strategies such as ‘Weymouth BID’ actively working to promote the business benefits of the town.

House Prices – terraced properties – £214,000. 2 bedroomed flats – £153,000. Detached properties – £365,00

Popular Schools – Junior: Radipole Primary School, St Nicholas & St Lawrence, St John’s. Secondary: Westfield Arts college, Wyvern Academy

Transport – Trains leave for Waterloo every hour, with and average journey time of 2 hrs 45.

WHY MOVE TO DORSET?

Take a quick look at Mumsnet and you’ll see numerous threads asking advice on how and where to move to Dorset from London. Here are a few of the reasons why people want to relocate:

HIGH LEVELS OF EMPLOYMENT

Some brand leaders are relocating their head offices to Dorset, including Magellan Aerospace, Farrow & Ball, Siemens, Clipper Teas and Animal. The employment figures are set to continue growing across the county and, as with the rest of the UK, there is increasing demand for higher level skills in the digital sector.

IT’S EASY TO TRAVEL TO AND FROM DORSET

Roads, rail, air and ferry connections are above average from Dorset. There is a direct train line from Waterloo to Weymouth, which calls at Bournemouth, Poole, Wareham and Dorchester. Bournemouth International Airport offers flights to more than 25 destinations and driving to London from Bournemouth takes just over 2 hours.

PROPERTY PRICES ARE REASONABLE

One of the major reason for families relocating from London to Dorset is the lower property prices, offering detached properties with gardens for the price you might expect to pay for a flat in the capital. Currently, detached properties sell for £448,298 on average, flats are around £211,464 and terraced properties go for £255,546.

£3M INVESTMENT IN DORSET EDUCATION

Dorset offers a great range of primary and secondary education across the county. The big news for 2018 is that over £3M is being invested in education for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Dorset.
