SOME TIPS FOR MOVING TO DORSET | DORSET GUIDE

A useful guide if you’re looking to move to the Dorset area or if you’re looking to relocate within Dorset:

REMOVALS TO DORSET | LIVING IN DORSET

There are plenty of reasons to move to Dorset – miles of sandy beaches, villages straight out a Thomas Hardy novel, some of the best weather in the UK, and a lively cultural calendar – to name just a few. But which are the towns and villages that distil the very best of Dorset?

Schepens has been moving families to towns and villages across Dorset for over a century now. We’ve seen, first-hand, the successes and the challenges. So, we’ve put together a list of the 5 destinations that seem to have worked best for clients who’ve started a new life in the area.

    1. BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth was one of the Victorians’ favourite holiday towns and it remains a popular holiday destination to this day. It’s strength, however, lies in its ability to function as a successful economic hub as well as offering beautiful beaches. Gaming and digital industries have grown by around 70% in the past few years, and the town is also home to large financial companies such as JP Morgan Chase, and Liverpool Victoria.

    House Prices – 2 bedroomed flats – £244,314. Semi-detached properties – £366,314. Detached properties – £593,358.

Popular Schools – Junior: Queen’s Park Academy, Manorside Academy. Secondary – Glenmoor Academy, Bournemouth School, Bournemouth Girls’ School

Transport – Trains depart for Waterloo regularly, with an average journey time of just over 2 hours.

    2. POOLE

Poole has worked tremendously hard over the past few years to transform itself from a traditional seaside town to a highly attractive location for families to live and work in. It still has its 5 km of beautiful sandy beaches, of course, but much of the town’s architecture has been refurbished and the quayside has been transformed. Poole is now considered a great place for high tech start-ups with over 3,000 new businesses being supported every year.

    House Prices – 2 bed flats – £308,812. Semi-detached properties – £382,085. Detached properties – £648,720.

Popular Schools – Junior: Baden Powell, Canford Heath Junior School, Oakdale Junior School. Secondary: Poole Grammar School, Parkstone Grammar school for Girls, Magna Academy.

Transport – Trains leave regularly from Poole to Waterloo; the journey takes around 2h 15 mins. Trains take 10 minutes to Bournemouth.

    3. DORCHESTER

If you’re looking to live inland, Dorchester is a handsome town, and the fictional location of Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge. This is a working market town and something of a haven for people wanting to escape the picture-box prettiness of many of Dorset’s smaller towns. There are plenty of High St brands on offer, and a plethora of events, groups and entertainment happening throughout the year.

    House Prices – terraced properties – £310,589. Semi-detached properties – £603,859. 2 bedroomed flats – £237,675

Popular Schools – Junior: Damers First School, St Mary’s C of E. Secondary: The Thomas Hardye, Dorset Studio School.

Transport – This is not commuter-land. It is possible to travel by public transport to London Paddington, but the journey is complicated and takes 2.25 hours. Connections to Bath and Bristol are better.

    4. BRIDPORT

A bustling market town that is known as the ‘Notting Hill of Dorset’. The town has a magnificent array of independent cafes and shops, artisanal bakers, and great restaurants. Bridport has two markets each week, one sells antiques, the other has fresh produce. There’s also an annual literary festival. And, as if that weren’t enough, it is only minutes away from the stunning Jurassic Coast beaches.

    House Prices – flats – £163,615. Terraced properties – £308,281. Detached properties – £563,868.

Popular Schools – Junior: Marshwood C of E Primary, Burton Bradstock C of E. Secondary: Sir John Cox Colfox Academy.

Transport – This isn’t a place to commute to or from as the transport links are poor. You would definitely need a car to live here.

    5. WEYMOUTH

Weymouth has numerous awards for its sandy beaches, including hard won Blue Flag Award, the Beach Award, and the Seaside Award. The town is still visited by millions of holidaymakers every year, but the current ‘big push’ is to attract more businesses to the town. Currently there are around 2,000 businesses in the area but there are a number of local and governmental strategies such as ‘Weymouth BID’ actively working to promote the business benefits of the town.

    House Prices – terraced properties – £261,887. 2 bedroomed flats – £183,817. Detached properties – £471,380.

Popular Schools – Junior: Chickerell Primary Academy, Radipole Primary School, St John’s C of E. Secondary: Budmouth Academy, Weymouth College.

Transport – Trains leave for Waterloo every hour, with and average journey time of 2 hrs 45.

    Planning a Move to Dorset?

There are so many good reasons for moving to Dorset that it’s hard to know where to start! This beautiful county gets – on average – 364 more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the UK, which may have something to do with the fact that it is also the area with the highest life expectancy in Britain. There are also miles of sandy beaches, vibrant towns beside the sea and a rapidly growing business community.

Schepens has been helping families with Dorset removals for over 100 years now. We’re a family-run, local removals company and it’s always a joy to help newcomers move to this beautiful county. As one of the South-West’s leading providers of house removals, office removals, storage, and overseas removals, we’ve grown a reputation over the years for making a move to Dorset stress free; want to know how we do it?

Budgeting for Your Move to Dorset

Whether you’re moving to Bournemouth from London, or from just along the coast in Poole, an accurate removals quotation helps with your budgeting. Schepens provides that for free. A move co-ordinator will carry out a survey of the size of your move, either in-person, or online. Once it’s done, we will provide a detailed and accurate removals quote.

Schepens is a Hands-On Removals Company

The vast majority of our moves are successfully completed without a hitch. One of the reasons for this is that we maintain good communication with our movers in the period prior to the move. If you need to speak to us, we’ll respond immediately. If you’ve got a query, we’re more than happy to sit down and chat through the answer with you.

    A Century of Professional Experience

We understand how stressful moving can be, and we are always willing to go the extra mile for our movers.
