6 Moving and Packing Tips
One of the things the Schepens removals teams hear regularly from clients is “I just don’t know where to start!”. And we completely understand that feeling. Having moved thousands of families across the UK and overseas, we’ve see first hand the stress and anxiety removals can cause. Our aim, at Schepens, is to provide removals that reduce that anxiety. We do this by offering first class support, professionalism, and attention to detail every step of the way.
Our clients tell us that the sheer amount of ‘stuff’ that needs to be done when moving house can be overwhelming. One thing we’ve found that helps is to create a clear ‘high level’ plan of what needs to be done and when. This shrinks the hundreds of tasks down, and makes the process manageable by listing one thing at a time. So here are our 6 tips for planning, and managing your removals.

1. Have a Purge
Once you know you’re going to be moving, it’s worth taking the opportunity to de-clutter. All those things you’ve been been to get rid of for years – now’s the time! Work methodically through each room, and the garden. You could donate what you don’t want to charity, or hold a garage sale. Clearing the decks feels very positive, and leaves you with less to move to your new home.
2. Plan Your New Home
Spend some time with the floor plan of your new home, checking out where your furniture will go. Imagine each room in turn, and don’t move on to the next until the picture in your head is clear. Remember to include curtains, rugs and light fittings. This serves two purposes; first there’s a clean plan in place, and second, you know in advance what furniture you’ll be taking, what you’ll need to store locally, and which items need replacing.
3. Find a Removals Company
You now know exactly what’s going to be included in your move, so this is the moment to find a removals partner. Many people use quotes to help them make their decision. We would just caution against relying on ‘quick online quotes’ for anything other than a ‘ballpark figure’. At Schepens UK Removals we allocate a move co-ordinator to work with clients on developing a tailored removals plan. Once we know exactly what’s required, we provide an accurate quotation for free.
4. Packing Your House Up
The decision to make here is whether you’ll be packing up the house yourself, or using a professional packing team. We see the benefits of both, but if you’re juggling full time work with a family and trying to manage moving, we would counsel professional packers. At Schepens we can provide trained packers for busy movers, or we’ll supply durable boxes and wrapping if you plan to do it yourself.
5. Non-Standard Items
Whilst most items will be perfectly safe and secure in our state-of-the-art removals vehicles, there are some items that require specialist attention. In our time, Schepens has moved pianos, a harp, antiques, sculptures and works of fine art. Where an item is of particular personal, or financial value, we can offer bespoke packaging, handling, insurance and removals.
6. Remember to do ‘Change of Address’
Once all the big planning is in place, it’s worth making a list of all of the people and providers that will need to know you’re changing your address. Once the list is complete, you can check off one a day so that the task doesn’t become too onerous or overwhelming.
