    Tips on Moving to Kenya

Whilst any European or international move is an upheaval, moving to Kenya is likely to be life-changing. Expats talk about the struggles of accommodating to a climate and culture that is so entirely different from that of the UK. But – they insist – it’s worth the effort, because the benefits of shifting your cultural and geographic perspective are huge.

Kenya is named after it’s highest mountain which reaches 5,199m. It’s home to 47 different ethic communities and agriculture still contributes around 25% of GDP. Niarobi, the capital, is a financial hub for East and Central Africa and has a rapidly expanding economy, making it one of the most successful African states. It’s also a stunningly beautiful country, drawing huge numbers of visitors each year to visit the numerous game reserves, or witness the extraordinary wildebeest migration.

6 Tips if You’re Moving to Kenya

At Schepens we’ve moved a number of families to Kenya over the past few decades. Having worked closely with our removals teams throughout the process, they’ve been kind enough to give us their tips on what it would be helpful for movers from the UK to Kenya to know before they embark on their journey.

    1. Obtaining a Visa

British Nationals do need a visa to enter the country, and these can be obtained on arrival at Nairobi airport but there are likely to be long queues. You can also apply in advance from the Kenyan High Commission in UK.

    2. Work Permit

If your move to Kenya is due to business relocation, gaining a work permit should be fairly simple. If you are applying as an individual, you should complete the process before moving. The immigration department in Kenya is extremely slow, and very few applications are approved, post arrival.

    3. Arrange Your Housing Before You Move

There are definite areas to be avoided in Nairobi, and most expats favour either Karen, which is home to historic expat families, or Westlands which is a more international community. When you agree on your property you will probably need to arrange separately for utilities, internet, water filtration, and generator.

    4. Schooling in Kenya

There is a huge commitment currently being made to improving the standard of free primary and secondary education in Kenya. However, there are severe shortages of teachers across the country and this makes delivery patchy. Most expat families enrol their children in private or international schools.

    5. Get Yourself a Four-Wheel Drive

Across the African continent, the roads continue to be one of the major causes of death. Partly this is due to the poor maintenance and condition of the roads, but it’s also down to the driving culture which is no bound by any stable rules. You’ll feel safer in a four- wheel drive!

    6. Stock Up On Candles & Mosquito Repellant

Kenya Power & Lighting Company provide all the power for Kenya. Their monopoly has led to patchy service and power outages are a daily fact of life. As are the mosquitos. They’ll be after you from the moment you arrive so bring mosquito nets and start working to keep them at bay from day 1.

Schepens Can Help With Your Move to Kenya

Schepens is a family-run business that has been moving families around the world for over a century now. We see the stress that moving can cause on a daily basis, and our aim is always to shoulder some of the burden for clients, and offer professional support where it’s most needed. All our removals teams are trained to offer high quality customer service, and they all have detailed local knowledge of the mover’s destination.

One thing we know for sure is that every single move is different. That’s why we don’t offer standard removals packages. Instead we allocate a dedicated Move Co-ordinator to each client. One of their early tasks will be to determine their requirements, and align these to the range of services Schepens offers. These include:

    • Packing – our professional BAR trained packers will pack up your home, accurately label boxes and create a detailed inventory.
    • Insurance – your goods will be fully insured whilst in transit. Should you wish to take out additional Accidental Damage or Extended Liability cover, we can arrange this.
    • Non-Standard Goods – should you be planning to ship any high value goods, or goods that have a particular sentimental value, we can arrange bespoke packing, insurance and transit.
    • Storage – if you wish to store furniture or goods in the UK, Schepens has local, fully managed storage facilities offering a secure, controlled environment.
    • Removals Fleet – Your goods will be shipped in one of our state-of-the-art removals vehicles which run on air ride suspension and boast an adjustable bearing system, which ensures little or no movement of vehicle content.

Schepens Takes Excellent Care of Movers
