“The OECD Better Life Index recently found that Netherlands was really good at striking a balance between leisure, work and personal care. Social attitudes tend to support a healthy work-life balance here. There’s no pressure to work late to show how dedicated you are. What’s it like living and working in Netherlands?

I’d live here for the snacks alone

“The Dutch aren’t known for their culinary traditions – why not? OK, so many of the snacks I love aren’t that healthy, but I can always jump on a bike to burn off the calories. I knew about stroopwaffels when I arrived, but since then I discovered the delights of bitterballen, Dutch fries with mayonnaise, and the winter treats pepernoten (thank goodness they’re not available all year round!).”

Work knows its place in Netherlands

“I’ve worked in places where your life shrivels to nothing because of the demands made on you. The Dutch expect you to be focused, competent and personable, and that’s about it. You’ll work 40 hours a week and the rest of the time is yours. Your family is considered important, more important than work, and you’re treated with respect.”

Bikes are a religion

“I didn’t like cycling before I came to work in Amsterdam. I still don’t like cycling but it’s the best way to get around the city. And cycling makes much more sense in a flat country. My two children cycle everywhere, and so do all their friends so it’s easy for them to hook up and spend time together. Bikes are a bit of a cult here, though, and I’m not that in love with them.”

Forget spontaneity

“I spent the first few months thinking that I’d spontaneously end up having drinks with colleagues after work. No way. People in Netherlands are very open, and they’re happy to chat on public transport or in shops, but a coffee needs to be booked in advance (at least a week) if it’s to happen. Now I organise, that works well, and I’ve joined a choir.”

“Situated right in the centre of Netherlands, Utrecht is a great place to live. Everyone cycles because it’s the best way to get around; there’s all the shops you need, and plenty of restaurants and coffee shops. There’s a huge train station with train lines to everywhere in the country, so you can be in Amsterdam in 30 minutes. The summer is particularly nice; everyone goes out to the local lakes to swim.”

3. Delft

“If you want a slower pace of life, with easy access to the big cities such as Amsterdam or Rotterdam, Delft is the perfect choice. It has an incredibly beautiful old town centre punctuated by canals with riverside shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. Whilst it’s a pretty laid back place to live it’s certainly not sedate. Delft is a university city so it has energy and a diverse population for most of the year.”

4. Amersfoort

“Amersfoort is just a 33 minute train ride from Amsterdam, and yet it feels like another world. It has a medieval city centre, with large parts of the ancient city walls still standing. Very much a family city, because it feels so safe, and it’s surrounded on three sides by beautiful forests. If you want somewhere to live that feels less anonymous than a modern city, this is definitely a place to consider.”

“My experience of Amsterdam is that it’s a place where people work hard and play hard. Come 5pm the office clears straight away and everyone’s out meeting friends or eating out with their family. The Dutch seem to love partying, whether its clubbing till dawn, or concerts, and it makes the city very buzzy.”

“I moved to Amsterdam with my family for work initially, but then I decided to move here. The city’s very attractive to multinational companies, many of whom do their business using English. Initially my employers sorted out our housing – thank goodness – but we now live in Watergraafsmeer which is a lovely, leafy area with some great restaurants.”
