Working in Stockholm

Why Working in Stockholm is Popular For Families

Being a parent is a wonderful experience, but navigating between childcare, work, school pick-ups and playdates can leave families wrung out. Sweden seems to have found a way to balance the responsibilities of work and childcare more equitably, with the result that working in Stockholm is considered an excellent option for families.

Many of the movers Schepens helps to relocate to Sweden are working in Stockholm and bringing up a young family at the same time. Lots of them have talked about the child-focused work-life balance as one of the deciding factors in moving there. We asked some of them what Stockholm offers them in the way of parental support.

I Don’t Have to Apologise For Doing the School Run

“Back in the UK I was always having to excuse myself for ‘nipping out’ to pick up my twin girls. It felt shameful, like I hadn’t got my act together. In Stockholm it’s just the opposite. Come 3.30 people are starting to leave their desks for the school run and it’s totally OK. You do the same hours; they’re just flexed to fit in with childcare.”

Having Children Doesn’t Mean Financial Hardship

“Parents are supported 100% by the Swedish government, and the policies are really carefully thought out. So, my partner and I get 480 days parental leave. We can split between us and 90 of those days are specifically for dads. Neither of us have had to take a hit on our careers, and we’ve both been able to enjoy being with our children as they grow up.”

Stockholm is Child Friendly City

“Living and working in Stockholm with a young family is made much easier by having childcare centres that are easy to access – in fact I’m able to walk to the one my son goes to. There’s lots of green spaces and playgrounds in the city and we don’t need to use public transport much at all.”

When My Child’s Sick I Can Take a VAB

A VAB is for when your child is sick, so you need to take the day off to look after them. You get ‘temporary parental benefits’ for up to 120 days per child, per year. Imagine that! The child benefits come out at around 80% of your salary, so it’s no big deal to take time out to be with your child when they need you.”

Applying for a Work Visa

If you’re a British citizen, you’ll need to apply for a visa if you’re planning on working in Stockholm. You need a job offer in order to do this. Your employers will begin the application process, and you will be sent an email once this initial stage is completed. This will provide details on how to make your application, and what documents you will need to submit.
