What is Life Like in Denmark?

Thinking About Moving to Denmark?

When the people of Denmark were asked in a recent survey how happy they felt about being Danish, their answer was clear and unabashed. They ranked their life satisfaction at a solid 7.5 grade on average, placing them well above the OECD average of 6.7. In this blog we’ll be asking ‘what is life like in Denmark? And ‘what makes the Danes some of the happiest people in the world?’.

At Schepens Removals we have a unique perspective on life in Denmark. For over 100 years we’ve been moving families, students, and solo professionals to locations across the country to life and work there. We asked a selection of movers ‘what is life like in Denmark?’ and looked for some pointers on why Danes are so happy?

What is Life Like in Denmark?

We’ve pulled together the responses we got from movers and placed them under 4 headings:

  1. Working in Denmark
  2. Living in Denmark
  3. Experiencing Denmark
  4. Differences Between Denmark and the UK

1. Working in Denmark

The Danes have discovered that a good work/life balance leads to increased productivity and -of course – happier employees. The working week is defined at 37 hours and that’s what most people do. There isn’t any expectation that you stay till all hours putting in the overtime. And people with kids in school can arrange their day so they’re there to drop off or pick up at the school gates.

It’s a long, wet winter in Denmark but the Danes make up for it when the summer arrives. During the summer season in Denmark, businesses slow right down as people take their holidays. Danish workers get 5 weeks a year, so there’s plenty of opportunities to travel and enjoy the country’s beautiful beaches, too.

2. Living in Denmark

How you live in Denmark depends on the time of year. In the summer it’s all outdoors activities; picnics, bike rides, trips to the beach, swimming in the harbour. During the winter it’s completely different. Everyone’s indoors spending time with friends, visiting family, making nice food, and lighting lots of candles.

In Denmark both the summer and the winter are accepted and celebrated for the opportunities they offer. There’s not much moaning about the weather (although it is very dark and cold and wet in winter). Cycling is the norm, especially for commuters, and there’s a cultural shift towards more sustainable living that’s evident in shops, transport, waste and energy use.

3. Experiencing Denmark

You’ll be astounded by the beaches in Denmark; they’re world class, and most of them are completely empty. The best this is, you’re never more than around 30 miles from a beach, wherever you live in Denmark and there’s over 5,000 miles of coastline to explore.

Things to do is Denmark – there’s so much to choose from. Here’s a list of people’s favourites:

4. Differences Between Denmark and the UK

There’s less moaning in Denmark; people in the UK like grumbling about things, Danes less so. There’s also less ‘boasting’. In Denmark it’s bad manners to talk about how much money, or property you have. This has to do with a more egalitarian attitude towards wealth, and a more liberal attitude towards social benefits. It’s a source of national pride that everyone is taken care of.

More specifically, fish features in the diet more than it does in the UK and so do berries – loganberries, cloudberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries. Many of them are available in the UK but we don’t use them so much. The cakes are dangerously good, and so is the coffee. The liquorice not so much but there are hundred of different types to try.
