What are the Nordic Countries?

What are the Nordic countries, and how do they differ from the Scandinavian countries? It’s a difficult distinction to make, but historically the difference is important. If you are moving to one of the Nordic countries, you’ll be relocating to Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland. If, however, you’re planning a move to Scandinavia, you’ll be looking for removals to Norway, Denmark or Sweden.

How are the Nordic Countries Different From Scandinavia?

To this day, calling people from Finland or Iceland ‘Scandinavian’ will earn you a blunt correction. Why so touchy? Well, the countries of the Scandinavian peninsula are Denmark, Norway and Sweden. However, Iceland was at one point in its history ruled by Denmark, and Finland by Sweden. So, to call either of those countries Scandinavian is to regress them to their pre-independence history.

The term ‘Nordic Countries’ derives from the term ‘Nordern’ which means ‘the Northern lands’. It is seen as an acceptable description for the region and each of its members. These are the three Scandinavian countries, plus Finland and Iceland which are now sovereign states, and the autonomous Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.

What Distinguishes the Nordic Countries?

The Nordic countries are now far more than a geographically determined collection of countries. Here’s just a few of the ways in which they are a distinct entity:

  • The Nordic Council was established after WW2 to ensure inter-governmental co-operation. They oversee free movement across the Nordic countries.
  • The Nordic Model supports a welfare state that provides benefits to all citizens, paid for by a system of high taxation.
  • The Nordic Countries are amongst the wealthiest in the world and there has been comparatively little social unrest since WW2.
  • The World Happiness Report was initiated in 2012 and throughout its history the top 5 has been dominated by Nordic countries. Finland currently holds the top spot.
  • The Nordic Cross design is used in all the Nordic countries’ flags (except Greenland) each one differentiated by colour.

Second-to-None Customer Service

“We had a great experience moving back to Stockholm with Schepens! We didn’t have a huge amount of boxes and furniture, so they gave us the option of dropping everything off at their warehouse in the New Forest, which made the move much cheaper and was very appreciated! It was also great to have them manage the customs process for us and ensure everything went through smoothly.”
