Thinking of Moving to Canada from UK?
When Brits think of moving beyond Europe, Canada is one of the first places they consider. The fact that it’s an English-speaking country is a major consideration, of course. But the lure of Canada is about far more than expediency. The country is currently enjoying a reputation for diverse, high tech cities, thrilling wild landscapes, and a warm, friendly population.
The sheer size of Canada defies simple generalisations, however. It’s the second largest country in the world, beaten only to Russia, making it a place of wide divergences. The climate in the north is completely different to that in the south, east or west. And Quebec province in eastern Canada is predominantly French speaking. Whilst 30% of Vancouver’s citizens, on the western coast, are of Chinese heritage.
Here’s our brief guide to the sheer diversity of this beautiful country:
Edmonton – Alberta
This is one of Canada’s most northerly cities. The first thing residents tend to tell you about is the weather! The winters are long, and freezing cold. And in the summer, the land heats up and tornados regularly race across the largely flat landscape. Edmonton exudes a confidence in the fact that it’s up to the challenge, whatever the weather throws at it. It’s contemporary, has great restaurants, and boasts one of the largest shopping malls (home to one of the largest roller coasters) in the world.
Montreal – Quebec
Montreal sits in the south west of Canada, in the largely French-speaking province of Quebec. Everywhere in the city there are remnants of the French colonial past. From the cobbled European streets of the old town, to the historic monuments situated on the iconic Mount Royal rising out of the heart of the city. The winters tend to be cold and long, but the city takes the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular French-accented cuisine, and a vibrant live jazz scene.
Vancouver – British Columbia
This is Canada’s superstar city – and it’s mainly down to a spectacular location. Situated on the beautiful Pacific Ocean, Vancouver enjoys a temperate climate. Then there are the massive mountain ranges that offer a backdrop to the city, providing plenty of opportunity for outdoor sports throughout the year. It’s close to the US border, and has the energy of a US city. 52% of the population of Vancouver don’t have English as their first language, which makes it a fantastic place to eat, live and play.
Toronto – Ontario
This is the biggest city in Canada, and the most culturally diverse. Sat on the bank of Lake Ontario, it’s famous for a great waterfront culture that embraces swimming in the summer and skating in the winter. This is a university city, and the enormous influx of international students each year ensures that Toronto kicks at the cutting edge of the international arts, food, clubs and bars. Toronto’s known as a ‘global city’ and it’s envied for its diverse, international ambiance.
