Not to mention the natural beauty of its landscapes, and world beating work/life balance. Tempted? Then, read on to find out how to move to Sweden.

Finding a Job in Sweden

UK citizens need to have a job offer from a Swedish company before they are able to move to Sweden to live. The job offer must include details of your salary and the period of your employment. Sweden is a great place for entrepreneurs so plenty of businesses are looking to make the move. In order to get a residence permit you need to commit to remaining in the country for at least twelve months.

Applying for a Work Permit In Sweden

Once you have done the heavy lifting of finding a job in Sweden, much of the subsequent work around securing your work permit is done by your employer. They will make the initial application, and you will be contacted subsequently by email.

If your application for a work permit is successful, and your contract is for more than 3 months, you will automatically receive a residence permit at the same time.

Registering With the Swedish Tax Agency

Once you have completed you move to Sweden, one of your first tasks should be to register with the Swedish Tax Agency. They will provide you with an identity card, and personal number which you will need in order to open a bank account, set up heath insurance, register for child allowance or apply for disability benefits.

Healthcare in Sweden

If you are considering a move from the UK to Sweden, it’s important to know about the healthcare system. Sweden is known for its high-quality healthcare services and strong commitment to ensuring the well-being of its residents. This is a brief introduction to the services it offers:

  • Universal Healthcare Coverage. Sweden has a publicly funded universal healthcare system known as “Vårdcentralen.” Under this system, anyone with a personal identity number is entitled to receive necessary medical care and treatment.
  • Primary Care. Primary healthcare services in Sweden are provided through local healthcare centres called “Vårdcentral.” These managing general check-ups, consultations, vaccinations, and non-emergency care.
  • Specialist Care. If you have medical condition that requires specialist treatment, Sweden has a well-developed network of hospitals and specialist clinics across the country.
  • Patient Fees and Insurance. Healthcare is largely publicly funded in Sweden, but there may be small patient fees for certain services, such as doctor’s visits, hospital stays, and prescription medications. These fees are usually capped to ensure that healthcare remains accessible and affordable. It’s advisable to inquire about healthcare insurance options to supplement any potential out-of-pocket costs.

Education in Sweden

Sweden’s education system is considered one of the best in the world. If you are moving to Sweden with your family, you should contact your local municipality to register for elementary and secondary school.

  • Preschool. Children are registered for preschool from the age of one, and the fees are designed to make it accessible for everyone. Around 80% of families with young children enrol them in preschool.
  • Compulsory School. From the age of 6-16 children are required to attend school, and education is free. All lessons are conducted in Swedish.
  • Secondary School. Schooling from the age of 16 is optional but the vast majority of young people remain in education until the age of 18.
  • International Schools. Families moving to Sweden from the UK with children may wish to enrol them in fee paying International Schools which teach in English.

Learning Swedish

Most Swedes speak excellent English. If you’re planning to live and work in Sweden, though, it’s far preferable to learn Swedish. You’ll find that even a beginner’s understanding of the language will improve your chances of meeting new friends, understanding the culture, and enjoying the time you spend there. Many local adult education centres in Sweden offer language lessons, or there are local groups where you can practice your language skills.

Moving to Hamburg

Stress-Free Removals to Hamburg, Northern Germany

Hamburg is both the wealthiest, and the second-largest city in Germany. Its large and historic port attracts loads of visitors, many of whom want to take a look at the Reeperbahn, the city’s infamous red-light district, near the docks. Tourism is just one of the city’s industries; many UK professionals are moving to Hamburg to work in its thriving digital sector which attracts global companies, entrepreneurs, and startups.

Schepens specialises in removals to Germany. We make runs to locations across northern Germany every week, and we’ve done so for over a century. That’s why we’re able to offer our stress-free removals guarantee to movers. If moving to Hamburg is something you’re planning to do, you may be wondering where to look for somewhere to live. Here are our recommendations:

1. Mitte

The most fashionable area to live in Hamburg, as it’s slap bang in the middle of the city. Living in St.Pauli gives you access to the city’s dazzling array of clubs, restaurants, bars and music. It’s also a great place to experience the many annual events such as the Reeperbahn festival. If you like the sound of Mitte, you’ll need to organise accommodation early on as it’s challenging to find.

2. Altona

This is a very popular area for the international community living in Hamburg. It started out as an independent city and even now it maintains a distinct identity. It’s full of green areas, enjoys numerous farmers’ markets and hosts an annual cultural festival called the ‘Altonale’. There’s great shopping, nightlife and restaurants – and it’s in a great location, on the right bank of the Elbe.

3. Hamburg-Nord

For those who welcome a more suburban existence, whilst enjoying the resources city life has to offer, Hamburg-Nord is the solution. The residential areas resemble ‘villages’ of urban life, punctuated with a plethora of green, well-maintained parks. The transport infrastructure is excellent (with the airport nearby), and it’s easy to access the countryside for walking and camping.

Schepens is a fourth-generation, family-run removals company. We’re based in the UK but specialise in European removals. We make weekly runs to Hamburg, and locations across northern Germany. This means that we’re able to offer professionals moving to Hamburg to work, flexible scheduling, affordable prices, and full or part load shipping.

All our moves are as unique to us as they are to movers. We never forget how overwhelming a European move can feel, especially if it’s the first time you’re experiencing it. Anyone moving to Hamburg with Schepens is allocated a professional move co-ordinator. This is someone who knows the city well and specialises in removals to Germany. Your co-ordinator will create a bespoke removals plan, based on your specific requirements.

Schepens removals to Hamburg include:

  • Free, No Obligation Quote. We’ll assess the extent of your move online or in-person. We’ll then provide a detailed and accurate quote to help with you budgeting.
  • Customs Paperwork Completion. Our experience of removals to Germany means that we know the customs regulations and can complete your paperwork for you.
  • Professional Packing Service. Our BAR trained professional packing team will pack up your home for you, label your boxes, and create a detailed shipping inventory.
  • Insurance. All your goods are covered by insurance, whilst in transit. Should you require additional Accidental Damage, or Extended Liability cover, we can arrange it.
  • Specialist Removals. If you need to move large, fragile or valuable items such as a piano, fine art or antiques we can arrange bespoke packaging and transport.
  • Self Storage. Should you wish to store items in the UK, Schepens offers local storage.  Our door-to-door service provides a secure environment for your goods.
  • Transport. Your goods will be shipped in one of our state-of-the-art removals vehicles which run on air ride suspension and boast an adjustable bearing system, which ensures little or no movement of vehicle content.

“They went above and beyond to ensure a smooth transition. Competitive price, professional service, incredibly helpful and not one breakage.”

Living in Copenhagen

Imagine living in a city where the traffic problems centre around too many bicycles! Copenhagen is a perennially popular city with expats because of its green credentials, its reputation for being the one of the happiest cities to live in, and its multiculturalism. It’s also notched up a reputation for having low crime rates and therefore being the 5th safest city in the world.

Schepens has been moving families to Copenhagen for over a century now, and we love spending time in this beautiful city. We don’t live there permanently, though. So we asked some of our former clients, who now reside permanently in Copenhagen, what it’s like to live there. Here are some of their responses:

Living in Gothenburg

Gothenburg, on Sweden’s west coast, is home to the country’s busiest industrial harbour. And if you’d visited the city a couple of decades ago, that would have been the headline. Over the past 20 years though, Gothenburg has transformed itself from an industry base to a 21st century city that’s a great place to settle in.

As of 2019 there were 210,000 expats living and working in Gothenburg. As Sweden’s second-biggest city there’s plenty of companies with making the city their base, with Volvo being the best known. But are the economic opportunities the only reason to settle there? We asked some of our clients, now with homes in the city, what it’s like living in Gothenburg, day-to-day.
