Moving to Leuven

This may the oldest university town in Flanders but its 25,000 strong student population ensures it’s firmly established in the 21st century. Leuven manages the blend of archaic and contemporary particularly well. The picturesque centre is a great place to hang out, and there’s a lively cultural calendar (including a beer festival of course). Leuven is compact, but if you hunger for the big city experience, Brussels is just 24km up the road.

The Schepens family comes from Belgium originally; we moved to England in the early 20th century. We’re now in our fourth generation as a family-run removals company, and over the past 100 years we’ve moved numerous families to this beautiful part of the world. We asked some of our former clients who’ve settled there, what it’s like living in Leuven. Here’s what they told us:

This is a city where the glorious natural landscape meets cutting edge architecture, and sustainable living. It’s been voted the happiest place on earth, and it’s 11th on the list of ‘coolest places to visit’. So what is it that’s so special about this Scandinavian city?

What’s Life in Tromsø Like?

Tromsø is the second most populated city north of the Arctic Circle in Norway. It’s a small island, no bigger than Manhattan, and it’s surrounded by snow-capped mountains all throughout the year. Tromsø isn’t a ‘showy’ city, it’s only got three main streets, one small shopping mall, and the world’s oldest cinema still in use.

Tromsø is home to the world’s most northern university, the Arctic University of Norway. Many of the clients we’ve moved to this region have taken up academic posts there. We asked them how they’ve found living in the Arctic north.

The Costa Del Sol has long been one of the most popular Spanish destinations for British expats. Malaga province is currently home to 47,000 of UK citizens registered in Spain, and numbers are rising for the first time since 2013. Estepona is a coastal town, an hour’s drive south from Malaga. Until now it’s attracted relatively little attention from expats, but our clients are gradually discovering its considerable charms.

Estepona is one of those places that offers the very best of traditional Spanish culture, and a tourism industry that supports, rather than overwhelms it. The town is full of Spanish shops and businesses, which is always a good sign. It’s also home to the Playa Rada, a beautiful beach which remains quieter than the better known locations further up the coast.

Planning a Move to Stockholm?

What’s not to love about a city that is made up of one third water, one third green space and one third beautifully designed architecture? Stockholm is unique in being home to 25% of the Swedish population, dispersed across 14 islands where the freshwater Lake Mälaren flows into the sea. Environmental sustainability is a high priority for the city which aims to abolish the use of fossil fuels by 2050.

The Swedish Migration Agency has reported a two-fold increase in applications for Swedish citizenship since the Brexit referendum in 2016. There are plenty of reasons to see why you might choose to move to Stockholm; there is a healthy jobs market, the education system is ranked globally, and healthcare is excellent and low cost. Even the winter in Stockholm is less extreme than in much of the rest of Scandanavia!
