What’s It Like Living in Denmark?

Danes get more than their fair share of rain and grey skies each year. So they invented hygge – a celebration of spending times indoors, enjoying simple pleasures and sharing food with friends. The healthy pragmatism that informs life in Denmark goes some way to explaining its semi-permanent position at the top of the rankings for the happiest country in the world – it’s currently in second position.

Living in Denmark

Most of us were introduced to Denmark via ‘Danish Pastries’ – and indeed the Danes love cakes! But there is so much more to admire and enjoy in this beautiful country. From Renaissance castles, to colourful harbours and windswept, deserted beaches. For city-lovers, the Danes do urban living extraordinarily well. There’s world-class art galleries, theatres, music venues and shops, enveloped in a culture of inclusiveness.

Schepens has been providing removals to Denmark for over a century now. We feel extremely lucky to have the chance to work regularly in this extraordinary country and we enjoy our visits to its towns and cities. In order to find out what living in Denmark day-to-day is like, we asked some of our clients who are now resident there. Here’s what they told us:

MAKE YOUR REMOVALS TO DENMARK STRESS-FREE WITH SCHEPENS

If you’re thinking that Scandinavia may be a great place to work for a while, you’ll most definitely be considering Denmark as a potential destination. Schepens has been helping professionals, students and families who are moving from UK to Denmark for over a century, so we know the country well, and we know the logistics of moving there even better.

The World Bank recently named Denmark as the number one country in Europe for ease of doing business. For this reason, many multinational companies have invested in the country and have headquarters there. English is the language of business in Denmark, and the work-life balance offered to employees recognises and incorporates the need for family time alongside work time.

WORKING IN DENMARK

If you are moving from UK to Denmark for less than 90 days – to teach a specialist course perhaps or speak at a conference – you won’t need a visa for your stay. If, however, you are planning to work in Denmark for longer than 90 days you will need to apply for a work permit and residence permit.

  • Positive List. Every year on Jan 1st and July 1st Denmark announces a list of occupations which are in demand for highly skilled and skilled workers. UK professionals having job offers in these occupations can apply for a work permit. If granted a work permit, you can apply for a residence permit.
  • Minimum Salary Scheme. Anyone being offered a job with a salary that meets or exceeds the minimum salary set by the Danish Government, may apply for a work permit, even if the job is not on the Positive List. You will be required to work full-time, and hold a Danish bank account, into which your salary will be paid.

State education in Denmark begins at the age of 6, but many working parents place their children in day care from the age of 9 months. By the age of 3, 98% of children attend kindergarten. Throughout their school career, children will be encouraged to work collaboratively. They work in groups, are taught to problem-solve, and are always encouraged to challenge the accepted or established ways of doing things.

Education is free in Denmark and residents are able to choose where their child goes to school so long as there are places available. English speakers are given extra support, or they may be taught in a group with other English speakers until they become fluent in Danish. If you’reonly  moving from UK to Denmark for 6-12 months you may wish to enrol your child in an International school. Normally their first language is English, and they teach the International Baccalaureate.

THE BUSINESS CULTURE IN DENMARK

Workplaces may look much the same the world over, but how people behave in them can differ immensely. Danish businesses favour a flat management structure where teamwork is more important than a traditional hierarchy. The standard working week is 37 hours, and there’s no expectation that employees will take on overtime; spending time with your family is considered a priority.

The Danish workplace recognises that businesses will, at times, need to rebalance their workforce in order to remain economically successful. This is not allowed, however, to disadvantage workers. Employees that suffer as a result are compensated by a generous unemployment benefit of up to 90% of their salary for 2 years.
