Where to Retire to in France?
The weather becomes warmer the further south you travel in France, which is why many retirees choose to settle in Provence or Languedoc which enjoy a Meditteranean climate. Unsurprisingly houses are more expensive the further south you go; prices are lower further north, particulary in the Massif Central. Brittany offers some of the best property bargains, and great access to the UK!
Cost of Living in France
The cost of living is around 5% higher in France, and it’s worth remembering that if you’re planning to move your pension into a French bank account it will fluctuate according to the euro exchange rate. It’s worth taking your white goods with you as these are more expensive in France, as are DIY goods. If you’re planning property renovations, stocking up in the UK will work out much cheaper.
The French are proud of their healthcare system as it’s affordable, accessible and consistently high quality. Whenever you visit the doctor or dentist you pay a small flat fee. Everyone has health insurance is provided by 1 of 3 not-for-profit organisations. Accident and Emergency services are free to access; you pay 30% of the charged total for treatment, and nothing for long-term treatment.
There isn’t a named permit for retirees, so the choice is between:
- Visitor Permit (1 Year) – this doesn’t allow you to work and you have to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your visit.
- Employee – if you plan to work in your retirement you will need to show a contract, and have your employment approved.
- Self-Employed – you will need to provide evidence of your qualifications, and submit a business plan for approval.
Most retirees apply for the Visitor Permit.
It’s worth noting that in France cars tend to be around twice the price we pay for them in the UK. You would be well-advised to take your car with you, although you will need to re-register it after 6 months, or sell it back in the UK.
