Residence in Norway
Currently, British citizens and British subjects need only a valid British passport to enter Norway. If you plan to stay in Norway for longer than six months you will need to apply for a residency permit. This will equip you with a personal number which you will need to rent a home, for example, or access the health service. Once the UK leaves the EU, entry requirements will change, and are likely to become more stringent.
Healthcare in Norway
For the first six months of your stay, British citizens can access the excellent Norwegian healthcare system so long as they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Once you apply for Norwegian residency you will be required to join the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (NIS). This allows you to gain access to low cost healthcare via Norway’s public healthcare system.
Norwegian Education System
It will probably come as no surprise that the Norwegian education system is well funded, globally recognised, and free to residents. English is spoken in Norwegian schools but children are encouraged to learn Norwegian. There are an excellent range of schools and universities across the country, including international schools teaching the UK curriculum.
