Spain has always been a popular retirement location for the UK, and a recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) bear this out. 37% of Brits living abroad choose Spain and it remains the prime destination for retirees. Spain is home to around 296,000 expats, who tend to move there for the sun, the beautiful beaches, a laid back way of life and and just a 2 hour flight to and from the UK.
If you’re tempted to take your family out to Spain for a new start, think carefully about your destination. The big cities, such as Madrid, Valencia, or Barcelona are the best locations to search for jobs. They’re all great places to live, and the cost of living is still comparatively low. It’s also worth checking out the skills shortages. There’s demand currently for teaching, IT, medicine, tourism and finance.

As an EU citizen you can travel to Spain without a visa, but if you’re planning to live there you’ll need a ‘foreigner identification number’ (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) and a ‘residency card’ (Tarjeta de Residencia). You apply for these from the ‘Immigration Office’ (Oficina de Extranjería). Once you’ve completed your application, you’ll be invited to an interview at which point you’ll need to produce your official documents.

You’ll probably want to rent a property when you first arrive in Spain, so that you can take time to find out where you would like to live permanently. There are a number of property portals which you can use to find properties. If you decide to use an Estate Agent, be aware that they are probably paid by the landlord. When applying for a property you’ll need to produce: evidence of employment or ability to pay the rent, tax identification number (if you are working), passport, references.
Healthcare in Spain
Spanish healthcare is highly regarded globally. It’s free of charge to anyone living and working legally in the country. The only cost accruing to the user is a proportion of the prescription charges. If you’re not eligible for state healthcare, you will need to take out private health insurance. When you first arrive in Spain you’ll be able to use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
There’s a good standard of education across Spain, and between the ages 6-16 it’s free to access.
