Why Relocate to Portugal?
It’s the 5th most peaceful country in the world and no wonder, given the Mediterranean climate and miles of beautiful beaches. The Portugese are friendly and welcoming to foreigners, and the local food and wine is recognised to be some of the best in Europe. Lisbon, the capital city situated on a hill above the sea, combines cobbled streets, great shopping and a vibrant multicultual culture.
Visa and Work Permits in Portugal
EU members can relocate to Portugal for 3 months without having to register. If you plan to live and work in Portugal you’ll need to register at the local Town Hall (Camara Municipal) within 4 months. If you can prove that you are employed, or self-employed, or have sufficient funds, you’ll be granted a 5 year residency certificate which gives you access to social security, healthcare and education.
Cost of Living in Portugal
If you’re prepared to ‘live like a local’ you’ll find Portugal much cheaper than the UK. Utility prices tend to be equivalent to Britain, but rents are much cheaper especially if you’ve been living in London!! Property prices are rising but Lisbon is still considered a great place to buy with houses averaging €1,386 per square metre. The Property Owner’s tax is cheaper than the UK’s Council Tax.
Healthcare in Portugal
Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will give you the right to free emergency medical care for your first 3 months. Once you have a residency certificate, you’ll be given an NHS user number (número de utente) which gives you access to state-funded healthcare. Private healthcare is also available in Portugal; taking out medical insurance is the most cost-effective way to access it.
Education in Portugal
As a resident of Portugal your children will have access to the public school system. The education system is well-regarded and is free to attend.
There are a number of international schools located across Portugal. The programmes they offer range from the British GCSE and GCE examination system to the International Baccalaureate (I.B) programme.
