Moving to Tauranga
If there were prizes for aptly named locations the Bay of Plenty, home to the New Zealand city of Tauranga, would have to be a major contender. Situated on the North Island, 200km south of Auckland, Tauranga enjoys stunning white sand beaches and an expansive coastline. It’s the largest city in the Bay of Plenty and is home to around 115,000 residents.
Schepens International Removals has seen a steady increase in the number of expats who are moving to Tauranga, and there’s now a well-established expat network in the region. We’ve been hearing from some of the families that have made their home in this beautiful part of the world. Here’s what they have to say about living in Tauranga:
1. Holidaying to New Zealand Made Us Move Here
Over and over again we heard that relocating to Tauranga all started with a holiday. It’s the kind of place that gets under your skin and before you know it you’re making plans to move there. The culture is very laid back on the Bay of Plenty, and the weather’s warm all year round. If you like fishing, diving or sailing – this will seem like an earthly paradise!
2. The Work Culture is Less Stressful
Many people told us that their working hours, and more specifically their commute, had reduced significantly since moving. The working day tends to start at around 8.30am and end at 4.30pm, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the beach. There’s lots of work around, we heard, but you need to ‘plug in’ to the local network, and there’s no guarantee you’ll walk straight into a job.
3. Mount Maunganui
Just a 15 minute drive from Tauranga is the stunning resort of Mount Maunganui, a beach town at the southern end of the harbour. It’s on a peninsula with a sheltered bay on one side, and a surfers’ beach on the other. At the tip of the peninsula is the dramatic Mauao peak. It rises 230 metres above sea level and can easily be climbed for the most extraordinary views out to the Pacific Ocean.
4. Cost of Living
Most people told us that prices were pretty much the same as the UK. Some items are more expensive but these tend to get cancelled out by things that are cheaper. There’s less choice for shoppers, we heard, although there are plenty of shops in the city. The biggest gripe was saved for overseas travel which is really expensive, and the NZ infrastructure. Really, you need a car to get around.
Do your homework about the area to move to, and the income you’ll need to support you before moving. Most people we spoke to told us it took them a while to settle – up to a year – but once they let go of the stress, and embraced the chilled out lifestyle they loved it. Oh, and be prepared for costly long haul flights back home.
