Moving to Portsmouth

Are you considering moving to Portsmouth? It’s the oldest and best-known trading port on the south coast with Henry VIII’s Mary Rose, and Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory still docked in the city, in memory of its maritime grandeur.

Contemporary Portsmouth is no museum piece, however. It’s very much a 21st century city and a popular location for families wanting to move to the coast in search for a better quality of life. Schepens has been providing local removals for families moving to Portsmouth for over 100 years. We asked some of our movers what attracted them to this seaside location.

1. A Young and Diverse City

“We were looking for a coastal location, but we wanted to avoid the typical ‘seaside town’. Portsmouth is a proper city, by the sea. The university ensures a lively night life, and a young vibe which is important to us. There are plenty of beaches nearby, glorious walks all around, and – thanks to Gunwharf Keys – excellent shopping and places to eat.”

2. Commuting is Possible

“It takes between 90 minutes and 2 hours to get to London from Portsmouth, and the trains are pretty regular. Getting to Southampton – which is where I work – takes 45 minutes by train. The traffic can be quite snarly because Portsmouth is practically an island, so there is a natural bottleneck. But I love living here, and plenty of people have worse commutes.”

3. Lovely Places to Live

“The properties we looked at when house hunting in Portsmouth ranged from 21st century Waterfront apartments to elegant Georgian houses that make up much of the old town. If you’re moving from London there are some really beautiful properties to be had, we now have a spare bedroom for the first time, and a garden for the children to enjoy.”

4. A Good Place to Raise Children

“One of the things we really value about moving to Portsmouth is the sense of community we’ve found here. Maybe it’s to do with the island feel of the city, but we were welcomed in, the children found friends easily, and the schools they attend are great. There’s always loads of free things to do at weekends, and it feels like a very safe environment for young people.”
