Ottawa is the capital of Canada in southern Ontario on the banks of the Ottawa River. The name of the city is derived, appropriately, from the Algonquin word odawa meaning ‘to trade’. For over 150 years now it’s been the political centre of Canada. It’s also known for consistently low unemployment, and some of the county’s highest levels of education.
Ottawa is far more than an administrative centre, though. It’s relatively high standard of living means that it’s developed a great range of cultural institutions throughout the city. And it’s located just minutes from the magnificent Gatineau Park.
5 City Highlights if You’re Moving to Ottawa from the UK
We’ve been moving families to Ottawa for over a century now, and there are certain highlights to living there that we hear again and again from movers who have settled happily in the city:
1. The Rideau Canal.
The word rideau means curtain, and it was used to describe the magnificent falls at the confluence with the Ottawa River. The Rideau Canal was created to make the river navigable through the city. It’s now a favourite with Ottawa citizens because it provides them with a picturesque skating rink each winter, which is the focus of the city’s Winterlude Festival.
2. Gatineau Park.
This immense, magnificent natural landscape is just 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa. It’s 361 square kilometres of conservation land around the confluence of the Ottawa and the Gatineau Rivers, and is home to over 50 lakes. Most spectacular of these is the Pink Lake, Canada’s only meromictic lake, which means that the upper and lower layers of water don’t mix.
3. ByWard Market.
This is a home-grown attraction that is now attracting 50,000 visitors each weekend over the summer months. It was created back in 1826 and covers four blocks square. This unique event combines eclectic independent stores, entertainment, cafes and open-air stalls selling fresh produce and groceries.
4. Canadian Tulip Festival.
In 1945 the Dutch royal family sent Ottawa a gift of 100,000 tulip bulbs to thank them for offering safe haven to Queen Juliana during WW2. So began the city’s love affairs with the blooms which is now celebrated each year in the Spring. Ottawa claims to hold the world’s largest Tulip Festival, with over a million bulbs planted, attracting 650,000 tourists.
5. Shawarma Snacks.
In 1975 there was an influx of Lebanese migrants into the city, as a result of the Lebanese Civil War. One of the many benefits they brought with them was Shawarma snacks: marinated chicken or beef in a pitta sandwich with a range of tasty ingredients. It’s thought that Ottawa has the highest concentration of Shawarma outlets outside the Arab World.
