Moving to Oslo From the UK

Moving to Oslo From the UK

Oslo has been collecting superlatives over the past decade, so it’s no wonder so many people move there to live! In 2017 Norway was declared the happiest country in the world, in 2019 Oslo was given a Green Capital Award, and now it is considered the 2nd healthiest of 89 global cities. If you’re moving to Oslo from the UK, there seem to be numerous reasons to be feeling quite smug about it!

Schepens has been helping families and individuals moving to Oslo from the UK for over a century now. We make weekly runs to Norway, and Oslo is one of the cities that we regularly ship to. Our movers tell us that it’s an incredible city to live in, but that it’s very different from living in an equivalent city in the UK. Here are their tips for Brits planning a move:

1. You’ll Develop A Love for Eating in

Oslo is an expensive city to live in, especially when it comes to dining in restaurants. Alcohol, in particular, bumps up the price. After the first few months of living in Oslo we decided to plan our meals out, rather than doing what we did at home and popping out when we felt like it. Instead we‘ve started to cook more, and explore Norwegian cooking from our kitchen!

2. Ditch the Cash

When I first arrived and was getting to know the currency and the cost of everything I tended to use cash more. I was shocked to come across a few cafes and independent food shops that wouldn’t accept cash. Once I understood, it made sense. The city supports a sustainable lifestyle wherever it can, so credit cards and payment apps are in; cash is out.

3. Vitamin D Really Helps

The winters are very cold (temperatures can get down to -15º), and the days are short. Once you hit December it can feel like a permanent twilight. Two tips: buy winter clothes in the UK – they’re much cheaper – and get used to taking Vitamin D regularly. It combats Seasonal Affective Disorder, and helps keep your mood buoyant.

4. Learn to Ski

If you want to cut through the natural Norwegian reserve, observe families skiing. It’s more than just a sport, skiing is like a national religion. As a result there’s plenty of local slopes to learn on and, of course, then you can try out the wilderness slopes. If this sounds too scary, sledding is also hugely popular and largely free; you simply rent the sled and ride.
