Are you Considering Moving to Munich?
Located South of Germany, Munich is the capital and most populous city of Bavaria (1.5 million) and lies on the River Isar. The city attracts many expats each year, who are drawn by its powerful economy, world-class infrastructure, and a high standard of living. Munich is currently of the fastest-growing destinations in the country; low unemployment rates means the city is a great location if you’re looking for job opportunities.
We’ve moved numerous clients to Munich over the years – here are 4 aspects of the city they advise newcomers to embrace.
Quality of Life
As in previous years, Munich is once again the city that provides the highest quality of living in Germany in 2019. On a global level, the city ranks third among the best cities to live in. For such a large city, Munich offers an exemplary quality of life with a reasonable cost of living. Its exceptionally clean, safe and family-friendly. The crime rates are low, law enforcement is efficient and social and political conditions are stable.
Munich also offers an exceptional range of international schools, good urban infrastructure, and a wide variety of recreational activities. Overall, combined with the fact that there are various well paid jobs in a range of industries, the capital of Bavaria is an exceedingly pleasant place to live.
Getting Around in Munich
Munich has an excellent, if complicated 24-hour public transport system, allowing riders to get virtually anywhere within the city. Tickets are purchased via an honour system and controllers occasionally carry out random ticket checks – make sure your ticket validated. There is a wide range of ticket options: including group tickets – and even your dog needs a ticket to ride! The city is also very bike-friendly as a move towards becoming more environmentally friendly – bikes are readily available for rent (you’ll see many locals commuting this way!).
The Perfect Location for Nature Lovers
Munich is fairly close to the awe-inspiring Alps. One feature of the local weather is the warm Föhn wind. It’s an exceptionally dry wind descends from the mountains clearing snow in its tracks. Enjoy spectacular views from the Alps from one of the lookout points in the city. Also be sure to climb the tower of St Peter near Viktualienmarkt; or take the elevator to the top of the Olympiaturm and enjoy the wonderful panoramic views. In two hours, you can travel to Salzburg in Austria by train. Switzerland and the Czech Republic are easily accessible for a weekend trip too, perfect for nature explorers!
Immerse in the German Language and Culture
If you’re planning a move to Munich it’s well worth learning some basic German in order to get to know your neighbours better. Over 95% of the residents in Munich speak the German language; the culture generally has a slow-paced atmosphere and approach to life. Munich is the hub of architecture, at times surpassing Berlin. The presence of numerous art galleries and ancient buildings are evidence of the momentous history the city has sustained. The city boasts numerous stand-out museums; the Deutsches Museum being the largest and one of the oldest museums in the world.
