Moving to Malmö
Malmö is a coastal city in southern Sweden which is located at the eastern end of the striking Öresund Bridge (featured in the BBC drama ‘The Bridge’); it’s 8km long and connects the city with Copenhagen in Denmark. Sweden’s third largest – and happiest – city is home to the world-famous professional footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović, and is now a hub for young families and tech start-ups, with almost half of the population under 35. It’s also very diverse, with around 170 nationalities registered.
Schepens have assisted many families and business individuals move to Malmö, particularly over the past few decades. We always appreciate hearing about how they’ve settled in their new home. Here’s a collection of experiences and tips they have about living in Malmö.

Acclimatise At Your Own Pace
Malmö is a diverse and dynamic hub for people and culture to be enjoyed at your own pace. Locals greatly value their quality of life and sense of community. In one day, you can enjoy coffee in small cafés such as ‘Lilla Lafferosteriet’, shop in independent boutiques, and enjoy a concert, opera, or explore ‘Malmö museum’ and art galleries. The city appeals to those who favour a balance between the outdoors and city life .
It’s Open-Minded, Young and Living
Malmö is full of young people who are choose the location to work as innovaters and artists. Expect an exciting range of creative experiences whether you enjoy food, art or music. With one of the largest universities in Sweden, the average age is low and the music and culture scenes are active and progressive. Malmö also has its own beach in the city, with white sands and crystal clear water quality.
Expats tell us that learning Swedish whilst living in Malmö isn’t essential, but if you want to feel part of the city, it’s recommended. Swedish is mistakenly thought to be a difficult language to learn but it’s actually pretty similar to English in terms of grammar, syntax, and even vocabulary. It’s a great idea to learn the basics before you move, and then extend your vocabulary once you’re interacting with locals on a daily basis.
A Super-Green City
As Sweden’s first Fairtrade City, Malmö boasts a vast range of organic food shops, fresh fruit and vegetable markets, vintage stores – and the country’s first restaurant and catering service using only food waste. Malmö was also named Sweden’s sixth most bike-friendly in the world – thanks to big investments in new cycle lanes and signage.
Early Springs & Memorable Summers
Whilst Stockholm is engulfed in a February chill, southern Swedes have already started to break away from winter coats and indulge in an early Spring. Days in Malmö during the summer are very long. First light appears 3am, with darkness falling just before 11pm. Summer evenings are always memorable for this reason, staying out late and enjoying the midnight sun is always a rare treat for anyone visiting.
