Moving to Copenhagen, Denmark

Thinking of Moving to Copenhagen, Denmark?

At Schepens we’re often asked which are the best places to live in Denmark and, of course, Copenhagen always tops the list. It’s Denmark’s capital, but it’s also a global city thanks to it’s thriving business culture. This international perspective feeds in to its ranking as Europe’s second most liveable city, and its continued reputation as one of the world’s happiest cities.

Schepens is a UK removals company that’s been relocating families, professionals and students to Copenhagen for over a century. Some of our movers found themselves in Denmark for work initially, decided to extend their contract, and ended up moving to Copenhagen in Denmark for good. We asked four of them what it’s like to live in Copenhagen.

1. Great Work/Life Balance

So I’d heard about this ‘great work/life balance’ before I arrived but it didn’t really register. Then I turned up to work 45 minutes early on my first morning and the place was deserted. I thought I’d got the wrong place! Come 9.00am everyone was in place and focused. By 5.05 in the afternoon, the office was clear once more. People are serious about their work here, but they keep it in its box.

2. You’ll Never Be Cold at Home Again

I would never have believed what a difference a fully insulated home could make to my life. Being chilly, or needing to add another sweater just no longer applies. My home is warm throughout the darker months and it doesn’t cost me a fortune in heating. Plus, the gyms are super cheap, and I get to cycle to work and across the city safely.

3. Renting Property Can Be Chaotic

We’ve been in Copenhagen for just over 5 years now and we’re only now feeling confident that our rental property is for the long term. It’s a messed up system with private rentals having weird rules and being allowed to charge huge deposits. One landlord asked us for 6 months rent up front, and a month in advance! It’s a great city but finding an apartment can be hard.

4. Learn Danish if You Want to Make Friends

Once I decided that Copenhagen would be my home for a while, I had to work out how to make some friends in the city. There were plenty of expats in my social circle, but very few Danes. In the end I bowed to the inevitable and started to learn Danish. It’s a tough challenge but it has opened doors for me and gradually, gradually I’m starting to get to know people here.
