Schepens Can Help With Removals UK to Germany
Expats describe Cologne as an effortless combination of warm, friendly neighbourhoods with a dynamic new riverside district and a celebrated cathedral which is dearly loved by locals. It’s the 4th largest city in Germany and has the largest university in the country. The charm and culture of this city is largely thanks to residents who are well known for being relaxed and happy. Economically, Cologne has always been an important city for trade in Europe and has greatly benefitted from globalisation – creating a prosperous future for the city.
Schepens have supported many families moving to Cologne over the years, and we always appreciate hearing how they’ve settled in. Here’s a selection of thoughts they have about the city.

Living in Cologne
The cities’ standard of living, healthcare and education systems are excellent. In comparison to other countries in western Europe, the cost of living in Cologne is fairly reasonable. Regular shopping bills are often noticeably less than other major European cities such as London, Paris, Brussels and Zurich. Staple foods are not too expensive in Germany, although upmarket supermarkets such as Rewe and Tegut are more expensive. If you shop at Lidl and Aldi, you can save between 10 and 15%.
The public transport (called KVB) is highly effective in Cologne. Trains and buses regularly pass at least every 20 minutes until very late evening. You can reach any place with a few minutes – and everywhere is safe. High speed train services will have you in Brussels in an and hour and a half and Paris is just over three hours. Amsterdam is also within easy reach by a short train or bus journey.
Find a Job & Working
Job hunting in Cologne is a long-drawn process, but not too difficult compared with other European cities. Expats recommend utilising tools such as LinkedIn to help you build a network of contacts in the city and find out about new work opportunities. The advantage is that many Germans speak good English; which enables employers to recruit from a wider pool of nationalities. Cologne’s economy is centred around the finance sector and media industry. Expats who are highly skilled in the engineering and education sector are highly sought after.
Warm Summers, Cold Winters
In Cologne, expats enjoy one of the warmest summers across Germany, thanks to the humid, warm climate. The summer stretches from May through to August with high temperatures reaching up to 30°C. Winter nights can get chilly, with temperatures getting as low as freezing between November and February – and the rainfall can feel never-ending. Nonetheless, during the winter the city benefits from cloud-cover preventing temperatures getting extremely cold.
