Moving to Boston
Boston is the oldest city in America, so there’s an impressive list of ‘1sts’ associated with it. It’s home to the 1st lighthouse to be built in America, on Brewster Island. Boston Common is the 1st public park to open in America – back in 1634. And the first subway ever was built here in 1897. Now Boston is very much a 21st city and home to some of the world’s largest employers in finance, life sciences and technology.
Schepens has been providing removals to Boston for over a century now, and we thoroughly enjoy our visits to this city drenched in history and culture. We’re aware that many of our clients have been surprised at the differences they’ve experienced between UK and US culture. We asked some of them, now resident in the city, to share their tips for families and professionals moving to the city.
1. Don’t Bother About a Car
Lots of expats get a car when they first arrive, and then it just sits in the garage. Most things are in walking distance. It’s a city, yes, but it’s really easy to navigate on foot. And there’s loads of walking guides to give you the best routes. If you do need transport, the ‘T’, or public transport system connects the city using subway, trolley car, bus and boat. It’s colour-coded and simple to use.
2. Boston is Expensive
It’s really expensive. The cost of living in Boston is 47% greater than the national average, from housing, to food, to goods. Housing is scarce because it’s an historic city so it’s not easy to expand. Most Brits who move here are relocating for work, so the finances aren’t a problem, but it does take some getting used to, nevertheless.
3. Sport is Like a Religion
Not fussed about sport? Living in Boston is likely to change that. The city is home to the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics and a host of other prestigious teams and players. Sport is in the DNA and likely to find its way into any conversation. And people don’t just talk about it, they play sport too. The Boston Marathon is world famous, of course, but team sports like soccer and ice hockey are also popular.
4. A City of Seasonal Delights
Boston is famous for its Fall season, but to be honest, it’s beautiful all year round. We enjoy four distinct seasons, with harsh winters and lovely summers. It’s like the ideal climate for Brits. There’s also numerous ways of enjoying every season. In the summer there’s a plethora of fairs, walks and trips to take. In the winter there’s some great music venues, theatre and art galleries. Craft beers are for all year round, of course!

Our aim has always been to achieve stress-free removals for our clients, and we’ve gained quite a reputation for doing so. We’re able to offer flexible scheduling, and part or full load shipping containers.
