If You’re Moving to Beijing, Schepens Can Help

Beijing is one of the oldest cities in the world. For three millenium it has been the centre of political power in China and is the site of no less than 7 UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Visitors still flock to the city to see The Summer Palace, The Great Wall and The Forbidden City but Beijing has plenty of 21st century attractions too. It has the fastest internet on the planet, is currently defining technology’s cutting edge and is virtually a cashless city.

This cosmopolitan megacity has been described as the 21st century ‘New York’, but there’s quite a bit for expats to acclimatise to.

Here’s 5 ways Beijing may take you by surprise:

1. Brush up on Your Mandarin

The large international expat community is a great resource for newcomers, but it can also give you a great excuse not to integrate with the city’s real culture. Making the effort to meet local people, eat in local restaurants and shop locally isn’t easy, especially when you’re living in one of the world’s largest cities. Learning basic Mandarin can make a huge difference. It’s the equivalent of a handshake to start a relationship.

2. Be Prepared for Pollution

It’s no secret that Beijing is one of the most polluted cities on the planet. So it’s well worth planning how you’ll cope with it before you arrive. Readings in 2018 showed the concentration of particulate matter (which causes yellow smog) was at hazardous levels. You’ll need air purifying machines for your home, and air masks for walking in the city.

3. Don’t Drink the Water

Beijing water is extremely hard, which leaves your clothes feeling starchy, and your skin feeling weird. This is because it contains magnesium and calcium. The simple way to manage this is to have water filters attached to your taps and shower. Even with a filter, don’t be tempted to drink the water out of your taps. Locals drink bottled water, or use water coolers.

4. Chemists are Non-Existent

Whilst there are a number of world-class international hospitals scattered across the city, you won’t find a chemist. Instead there are apothecaries, or traditional Chinese pharmacies. Most British medicines have a Chinese equivalent but there are a number of items that are extremely hard to find. Take your own stock of moisturisers, tampons, and stick deodorant.

5. Shed Your British Reserve

You may think shoppers are outlandishly aggressive when you first arrive in Beijing. In truth, what you’re seeing isn’t aggression, it’s a culture where haggling is the norm, which requires you to assert yourself. When shopping in markets, or in the street, always assume that you can get the published price down. It will take a while to get used to, but once you take the plunge, haggling can be fun!!
