Winchester is a wonderful city in which to live or work. It is the County Town of Hampshire and home to Winchester Cathedral, which is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe having been built in 1382 and being the proud possessor of the longest nave and overall length of all European Gothic cathedrals. Winchester is also conveniently situated close to the port of Southampton which is only a dozen or so miles away.
What Winchester is Well Known for
The cathedral featured in the well-known hit “Winchester Cathedral” which was recorded by The New Vaudeville Band and released in 1966. It was immediately copied by Frank Sinatra, Petula Clark, and The Shadows.
The City Cross features 12 statues of the Virgin Mary and various saints and dates from the 15th century, standing in the High Street. It is also known as The Buttercross.
Apart from the cathedral, the city is well known for Winchester Castle which is famous for housing King Arthur’s Round Table, but actually dates from the 13th century and therefore has little to do with King Arthur. However, it seems to have been painted for Henry VIII in 1522 and inscribed with the names of the Knights Of The Round Table. It is still a big tourist attraction.
Other famous landmarks in the city include The City Museum, The Hospital of St. Cross dating from the 1130’s, and the Winchester City Mill which has been restored and mills corn to this day, being driven by the River Itchen.
Finally I unpacked every box and I can say that every item was in very good condition. I want to thank you for the very good service you offered me and I recommended your company to my friends. Very Large Farmer’s Market
There is a very large farmer’s market which takes place on the second and last Sunday of the month. There are three golf courses in and around the city, and several bowling greens. Winchester was named “Best Place In The UK To Live” in the Channel 4 programme “The Best And Worst Places To Live In The UK” in 2006.
