1. Get the Paperwork Sorted
Documentation is extremely important in France so it’s important to have everything you need before you arrive. As a member of the EU Brits don’t need a visa to travel to France, and an EU passport is all you need to reside in the country. If you’re working in France you should register at your local social security office in order to get your social security number. UK citizens are currently being advised to also apply for a carte de séjour.
2. Learn French
Whilst it’s possible to ‘get by’ in Paris without knowing any French but you won’t feel ‘at home’ until you feel at ease with the language. If you’re planning to work or live in the city for any length of time, know French will help you to get to know people, and find out about the logistics of living in culture quite different from your own.
3. Finding Somewhere to Live in Paris
Most Parisians rent, and French law tends to favour the tenant. Even if you intend to buy property it’s probably worth renting in your chosen neighbourhood initially, to find out what it’s like to live there. There’s lots of red tape attached to rental applications in Paris, and there’s no way around it. So be prepared to hand over a hefty number of identifying documents just in order to be considered.
For your first 3 months in France you’ll need your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to access healthcare. After that you’ll be able to take advantage of the excellent social security healthcare system. This will cover around 70% – 80% of your medical and dental costs, but most French people also take out private health insurance to cover the rest.
