Are You Planning a Move to Germany From the UK?
Over the past 50 years Germany has actively encouraged immigration, with the result that it is now the second most popular migration destination in the world, after the US. There are currently around 120,000 UK citizens living and working in Germany. The Federal Statistics Office reported in 2018 that UK applications for German passports have risen by 162% with a record 7,493 applications received in 2017.
Changes to immigration laws have made finding work as an unskilled labourer pretty much impossible in Germany, but there are great opportunities for skilled professionals and scientists. Once you have a job, it’s a country that really respects the rights of workers. You’ll work fewer hours per week and the minimum annual vacation you can expect is 30 days. Maternity leave is also more generous than the UK with 14 weeks leave at 100% pay.

Looking for Work in Germany
The Job Seeker Visa allows you to spend 6 months in the country actively looking for work. Once you find work you will then need to immediately convert your visa into a residence permit. In order to apply for a visa you’ll need to have a university degree, be able to demonstrate experience of working in your chosen field, and have the money to support yourself whilst you search for work.
If you already have work in Germany, and you’re a EU citizen, you will need to register with the German authorities within 3 months of your arrival.
Healthcare in Germany
When you arrive in Germany your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will cover you for any emergency medical treatment you may need in the first 3 months. Thereafter you’ll become subject the statutory health insurance. If you earn a high salary, you can opt out of the public health insurance, and opt in to a private health scheme.
Education in Germany
As you would expect, the standard of primary and secondary education in Germany is high. If you’re moving to Germany for the long-term, enrolling your children in a local school, where they’ll be taught in German, is the best option. However, the curriculum is significantly different to UK schools, so for older children, or for short-term stays, a private bilingual school, or an international school would be preferable.
