Living in Salisbury

Thinking About Living in Salisbury?

The Wiltshire city of Salisbury has had quite the decade! In 2014 it was named one of the world’s top ten cities – alongside Vienna and Milan. Then, 4 years later, it was at the centre of an international news story when Sergei Skripal and his daughter were found unconscious on a Salisbury bench, poisoned by the nerve agent Novichok.

After months of city centre decontamination and investigation, and a further death caused by a discarded perfume bottle containing Novichok, the city began to return to normal. By 2019 it had recovered and was named the Sunday Times best place to live in the UK because of the exemplary way in which local people had weathered the crisis together.

So, what’s it like living in Salisbury now? We asked 4 movers who are now happily settled there.

1. Far More Dramatic Than I Expected!

I moved here with my family just before the Novichok incident and it was pretty terrifying at the time. On the plus side, we got to know our neighbours really quickly and everyone was really helpful. When you experience something like that it bonds you with a place. I love living in Salisbury and feel really lucky that it’s returned to being the sleepy, unassuming city I was so desperate to move to. No more dramas, please!

2. Property Is Really Expensive

The cost of living doesn’t feel excessive in Salisbury, but some friends were looking around for a property recently and we were shocked at the prices. The problem is that Salisbury’s a small city with limited space. If you look a bit further out to Fordingbridge or Wilton you’ll find lower prices and still be able to enjoy the glorious Wiltshire countryside.

3. A Beautiful Place to Live

In terms of size, it’s more of a town than a city really. You certainly don’t need to use the car to get around and the centre’s good for shops and restaurants. What makes the city feel so special is the cathedral and the Close surrounding it. It gives you the feeling of being in the middle of the country whilst you’re actually 2 minutes from the centre.

4. I Don’t Regret Leaving London

All my friends said that I’d be desperate to move back to London after 6 months. Well, it’s been 18 months and I’m still living in Salisbury and enjoying every moment. I miss the galleries and the theatre, so I have the odd weekend in town but most of the time I’m content right here. The markets are good, I walk a lot and there’s so much more sky to enjoy.
