Living in Leipzig | UK to Germany Removals
Living in Leipzig
“My Leipzig will I praise! A little Paris, one that cultivates its people.” So said the distinguished German writer J.W.Goethe who lived and studied in the city as a young man. The 21st century Leipzig is a dynamic, cosmopolitan east German city which has retained its love of learning and culture. For over 800 years it has claimed the title of ‘City of Music’. Today its classical traditions reaching back to the 15th century, vie with a contemporary and Gothic music scene.
Schepens has been moving families and professionals to Leipzig from the UK for over 100 years now. We always enjoy travelling to this green and historic city, and but our stays are always too short! We asked some of our clients who are now settled in the city what it’s like living in Leipzig. Here are some of their responses:
Try the Leipziger Rabchen!
The German food is great, and there’s a huge variety of eating places in the city, but the Leipziger Rabchen is out of this world! This traditional dessert is made of plums stuffed with marzipan and then deep fried in batter. Then they’re rolled in cinnamon and served warm. Very rich, but these are mouthwatering delights and really shouldn’t be missed.
A Spacious City
Leipzig is a major East German city but it always feels as though half the population are on holiday, because there’s so much space. Despite the fact that it’s one of Germany’s fastest growing cities it still has a smaller population than in its heyday during the 1930s. As a result, there’s plenty of space available for housing and accommodation is cheaper here than in virtually any other German city.
A Great Place to Study
Whether you’re a student at the university, or you simply enjoy reading or researching in historic surroundings, Leipzig provides the perfect environment. Building of the Bibliotheca Albertina commenced in 1543 and finished nearly two centuries later. It’s a beautiful space to read in and has an excellent collection of English literature.
Living in Leipzig at the Centre of Europe
After growing up on an island, it’s hard to get used to being at the centre of a massive land mass. You can get to pretty much any part of Europe from Leipzig, and whether you travel by car, rail or air you’ll arrive at your destination in just a few hours. Travel is cheap, too, and if you’re a keen cyclist there are safe and well-planned cycle routes across the city.
Plenty of Parks
It’s not particularly easy to escape the city to the countryside, but then there are plenty of beautiful parks to enjoy. The Lene-Voigt Park to the east of the city was created for a growing industrial population in the 19th century and it’s a hub for every kind of sport. If, however, you prefer woodland walks, there’s the Clara Zetkin Park with its decorative gardens, copses and historic bandstand.

“I’ve just heard from Germany that your chaps have been and collected my stuff and are now on their way again. My uncle who is there and let them in, asked me to write and tell you that you have a fantastic team! They were very pleasant, efficient, hardworking, and took the greatest care in wrapping and loading. It was an impressive operation.” Best regards, Chris Leybourne, Gutersloh, Germany to Kendal UK.
