Living in Devon

Thinking About Living in Devon?

If you’re considering moving out of the city and living in Devon, you’re not alone. Two years of on-and-off lockdown have changed the way we work, and many families are heading for larger homes and greener pastures in the south-west.

The Schepens team has been moving families down to the south west for over a century now. Many of our movers are now happily settled in their Devon homes. We asked them what advice they would give to people who are thinking about living in Devon.

1. Know What You Want From Your New Life

We love Devon, but the first property we moved to just wasn’t right for us. So, we sat down and worked out what we wanted from living in Devon, which made finding the property we now live in (and love) much easier. My advice would be to go through this exercise before you start looking at properties. Here’s 5 questions to get you started:

  • Do you want to work from home or commute?
  • What kinds of schools do you need for your children?
  • How close to the sea do you want to be?
  • Is sailing an important part of your new life?
  • How close do you want to be to shops?

2. A Sea View Costs a Lot More

I really thought that a sea view was an essential part of moving to Devon, until I saw the price tag! When I realised that we could save hundreds of thousands by moving inland, I quickly adjusted my expectations of living in Devon. Now we live 15 minutes from the sea in a house with a lovely garden and my happiness is complete.

3. Where’s Best If You’re Commuting?

You need to be fairly close to Exeter for a realistic commute by train or car, and even then, the journey can take up to 3 hours (rail) and over 4 hours (car). My partner goes up to town occasionally (once or twice a month) and that’s enough. Think carefully about how you’ll manage a commute, if you have to, and minimise travelling as much as you can.

4. Top 4 Places to Live

The top 200 places to live guide has 8 Devon locations. 4 of them I’m not familiar with, so here’s my top 4 of the 8:

  1. Totnes. An historic markets town that’s lively, chic and a great place to eat, shop or live in.
  2. Topsham. Great for commuters as it’s close to Exeter, and not too well known – yet.
  3. Teignmouth. Famous for its gin distillery! Also, lovely sandy beaches and a proper seaside town vibe.
  4. Tavistock. If you’re longing for walks on the moors, Tavistock’s ideal. Great markets, and some nice places to eat.
