Living in Copenhagen

Imagine living in a city where the traffic problems centre around too many bicycles! Copenhagen is a perennially popular city with expats because of its green credentials, its reputation for being the one of the happiest cities to live in, and its multiculturalism. It’s also notched up a reputation for having low crime rates and therefore being the 5th safest city in the world.

Schepens has been moving families to Copenhagen for over a century now, and we love spending time in this beautiful city. We don’t live there permanently, though. So we asked some of our former clients, who now reside permanently in Copenhagen, what it’s like to live there. Here are some of their responses:

My Fashion Sense Has Got Better

If there was a global index for fashionable dressers, it’s probably the case that the Danes would come top. First of all, there’s high end and designer fashion stores all over the city. Which may explain why Danes tend to look like they’ve just walked out of one. There’s a real sense of style, whether people are buying from vintage stores, or fashion shops, they look stunning – even on a workday.

Copenhagen Really Does Feel Safe

The first time you see a mother leave her toddler in a pushchair outside the grocers, you’ll probably get major palpitations. But then it becomes normal, and you realise that’s what it’s like to live a city with some of the lowest crime rates in the world. There’s low-level crime like pick-pocketing in the centre, but living in this city feels safe.

There’s So Many Festivals!

You’ll never be stuck for things to do if you’re living in Copenhagen. There’s great art, great theatre, great music, and so many amazing festivals. The Fonden Roskilde Festival is a major event wach year. It’s located about 35 minutes outside Copenhagen and is a week-long celebration of music, art and community events. It’s a brilliant experience for every member of the family.

It’s a Great City for Day-to-Day Living

No wonder it’s topped the happiness charts for so long. Living in Copenhagen feels like an experiment in how to do cities ’right’. The work/life balance is great. You get paid well, and most employers respect the fact you need ‘down’ time to give of your best. Everyone you meet speaks excellent English, and the city’s transport system is efficient, clean and operates 24 hours!
