Living in Bergen
‘Norway in a Nutshell’ is a popular tourist excursion in Bergen, but it’s also a great way to describe the city. Sitting between the two biggest fjords in Norway (Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord), and nestled betwixt the mountains and the sea, Bergen is everything you expect from Scandanavia. On the downside it also has the reputation for being Europe’s rainiest city, but this doesn’t dampen the exuberant energy of Norway’s second city.
Schepens has been providing removals to Bergen for over a century now. We travel to this beautiful city several times a week, and thoroughly enjoy the time we spend there. It’s not the same a living in Bergen though. we can’t know what day-to-day life in the city is like. To find out we asked some clients who are now settled in Bergen to share their experiences. Here’s what they told us.
1. A Human-Size City
The strangest – and most wonderful – thing about Bergen is that although it’s a city, it only has a population of 280,000. So if you’ve moved from London, most days feel like everyone’s decided to stay at home. Except in the summer, when the tourists arrive and the city feels completely different. Bergen feels cosmopolitan, but intimate at the same time.
2. The Perfect Location
If you’ve always wanted to explore Norway, living in Bergen is the perfect base. There’s seven mountains surrounding the city. The closest slopes to explore are Mount Floyen – or you can just take the funicular – with endless glorious views as your reward. You can take the coastal road to Hardangerfjord, the city’s closest fjord, or head out to Sognefjord for a weekend trip. Both have a unique beauty, but Sognefjord is breathtaking.
3. Winters are Great
Bergen comes into its own as the winter kicks in. It’s a bit colder that the UK (usually hovering just above freezing) but bearable. There’s lots of snow showers but it doesn’t tend to settle for long. So conditions are perfect to take advantage of the many cosy coffee shops dotted across Bergen. I love wandering through Bryggen at this time of the year – there’s not too many tourists and it feels like Christmas every day!
4. Street Art Sensation
Norway is expensive, there’s no getting away from that. And although higher wages offset the high prices it can take some getting used to. So it’s great to find things to enjoy in the city for free! Recently there’s been an explosion of street art in Bergen, and now the city is attracting artists from across the country. The first one that caught my eye was a Banksy original, dating back to his visit in 2000.
