Living in Belgium Pros and Cons

Schepens European Removals has over a century of experience moving families from the UK to Belgium, and vice versa.  Over the past 25 years we’ve mostly been moving professionals to one of the major cities for work, or supporting businesses relocating to Belgium. We’re always interested in our clients’ experience of living or working in a European country, so we asked them for their top tips when it comes to living in Belgium pros and cons.

Here are the 5 pros and cons that came up most regularly.

1. Belgium is Made up of 3 Regions

Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels are 3 distinct regions in Belgium. Each is governed by a different set of rules on housing, education and childcare. This complex state structure can lead to problems and complications if your work requires you to travel between them. The positive here is the range of languages spoken across the country. On a daily basis you’re likely to encounter Dutch, French, English, and occasionally German.

2. The Cost of Living

If you live and work in Brussels there’s every chance that you’ll be on an excellent salary. The city enjoys the second highest salaries in Europe. The drawback is that you’ll also experience very high taxes (20% – 50%). The tax collected is invested in the healthcare system, education and social security. Belgium also levies a high rate on VAT – 21%.

3. Public Transport

If you want to feel fully connected with Europe, Brussels is the city to live in. The excellent train infrastructure means that London’s just 2 and a half hours away, Paris is 1 hr 20 minutes away, and it takes just 3 and a half hours to Frankfurt-am-Main. The big complaint we hear about transport in Brussels, though, is the Metro. By all accounts it’s dirty, smelly and thoroughly difficult to use.

4. Finding the Right Place to Live

Our clients tell us than living in a small country like Belgium means you have a choice as to whether you live in the city, or in a neighbouring town. The drawback is that property is very expensive across Belgium, especially if you choose a city centre location. You also need to be alert to different regulatory requirements regarding property rental between the 3 regions.

5. Restaurants and Food

There are no ‘cons’ when it comes to this category! There’s a rich diversity when it comes to the restaurants available and they tend to be excellent value whatever the price range you’re looking for. The supermarkets in Belgium are mostly Belgian, French and German. Delhaize and Colruyt tend to top the popularity stakes for range of products, store efficiency, and prices. And of course, wherever you buy it, the chocolate is second-to-none.

Schepens Can Help if You’re Moving to Belgium

We’re a fourth generation family run business. We moved from Belgium in the early 1900s. Since then we’ve built our European removals business, with a commitment to a stress-free moving experience for clients. It delights us to ship regularly to all the major cities in Belgium, which means that we can offer flexible scheduling, and part or dedicated load containers.

Tailored Removals if You’re Relocating to Belgium

In all the years we’ve been working in Belgium, we’ve never yet encountered a ‘standard’ move. Which is why we don’t offer ‘standard removals packages’. Instead, we allocate each client a dedicated Move Co-Ordinator who will create a uniquely tailored removals plan, based on your specific requirements.

Schepens range of removals services include:

  • Packing. Our professional, BAR trained packers can pack up your home for you, provide labelling for all your boxes, and create a detailed inventory in preparation for shipping.
  • Insurance. Schepens insures your goods in transit. Should you wish to supplement this with Accidental damage, or Extended Liability policies, we can arrange cover.
  • Non-Standard Goods. If you’re planning to move antique goods, large musical instruments, or pieces of fine art, we can arrange bespoke packaging, handling and shipping.
  • Self Storage. Should you require storage for your goods in the UK, Schepens can help. We provide a door-to-door service, and secure, climate controlled facilities, local to you.
  • Transport. Your goods will be shipped in one of our state-of-the-art removals vehicles which maintain a constant temperature and humidity, run on air ride suspension and boast an adjustable bearing system, which ensures little or no movement of vehicle content.
