Living in Andover
Located in Hampshire’s beautiful Test Valley, Andover developed as a wool town and an important staging post for coaches travelling between London and Salisbury. For much of the 20th century it was an RAF town and, in 2012, it became home to the Army Headquarters. Andover residents are currently working proactively to realise the ‘Andover Vision’, a community initiative designed to support the town in fulfilling its potential and raising local aspirations.
Schepens has been moving families to Andover in Hampshire for more than a century now. We know the town well, and love working there, but we’re not residents. In order to find out what living in Andover is like, we asked some of our clients who’re now residents of the town. Here’s what they told us.
1. A Stunning Location
Andover is a fairly unexceptional town BUT the location is superb. Travel in any direction and you’ll find beautiful villages that take your breath away. Our weekends tend to be spent walking in glorious countryside or trying out the country pubs nearby. Our favourite villages in the area are Hurstbourne Tarrant, St Mary’s Bourne, The Chutes and Abbots Ann, all less than 15 minutes away.
2. Great Hopes for Andover
Andover is one of those towns that always feels like it’s about to come into its own – but I’m still waiting. Having said that, the local community is hugely proactive in trying to improve local life, resources, and culture. If you want to get involved in the ‘Andover Vision’ group it’s very welcoming and it’s a great way to get to know people.
3. Happy to Live Here
There’s lots of negative stuff written about the town, but my experience of living in Andover has been positive from the day I moved in. There’s a weekly market, a local theatre that programmes throughout the year, and a load of lovely places to eat either in the town centre or just outside. Not great for shopping, but Basingstoke and Southampton are only 30-40 minutes away, so easily accessible.
4. Great Walking Country
Initially I chose Andover because the commute into London is pretty good. And after all that travelling, I just want to spend the weekend in the fresh air. At the moment I’m exploring The Test Way, a 44 mile long trail along the River Test from Inkpen to Southampton. I had no idea how beautiful this part of the country was, and I’m now addicted to exploring every corner of Hampshire.
