Life in Southampton

What’s Life in Southampton Like?

If you’re planning to leave London in search of larger properties and a better quality of life, Southampton’s probably on your radar. Its just 90 minutes from London, so no final breaking of ties required, and it’s on the sea (well, the estuary). This unique city centre – which feels more like a town – has a ridiculous number of green spaces including 365 acres of common land dating back to 1228!

Schepens is a Southampton removal company, and our family business has been helping families to settle here for over a century now. Who better to ask about life in Southampton than movers who’re new to the city, but now settled here? We asked 4 or them what changes they experienced in their lives since moving to live in Southampton.

1. Smelling the Sea Air

We’ve always wanted to live by the sea and this feels like the real deal. Loads of cruise ships use the port so you hear the booming of their horns regularly, then there’s the seagulls and the salt on your tongue. Southampton’s been a port for centuries and, even though it got bombed in the war, there’s still enough of the old town to feel transported back to another age.

2. Makes You Feel Young

I was a student at the University of Southampton then came back here one I’d had kids. What I love about the city is its different rhythms. Every September it fills up with 40,000 students who make the place come alive. Everyone walks, because getting around by car is a nightmare and you can get everywhere on foot. Best of all, living in Southampton keeps me young; maybe it’s just me but it feels like a really hopeful place.

3. It’s Great for Travelling

Southampton isn’t my favourite place in the world, but it is a great starting point for journeys on foot, rail and sea. (There is an airport but I don’t tend to use it.) I make regular trips to London, Edinburgh and Cardiff and there’s a direct line from the train station. The New Forest is 20 minutes away by car and I go there to walk regularly. Then, I can be on the beach in Bournemouth in under an hour.

4. Suits Me Better Than a Big City

In London there was always too much to choose from, so I always felt I was missing out. In Southampton there’s far less choice which makes choosing much simpler. I’ve been to some great music gigs and in a normal summer there seems to be some kind of music festival every week. Eating out is good, lots of different kinds of food to choose from, and we get to visit family on the Isle of Wight regularly.
