International Removals UK to Canada

Back in 2013 Canada was the third most popular destination for British Expats, pipped to the post by Australia and the USA. Following on from the UK Referendum in 2016, Canada’s popularity as a destination made headlines once again. Six weeks after the result, applications for Canadian visas spiked as did requests for permanent residency.

Canada is currently home to over 700,000 expats. Some of them have relocated there for work, but many are seeking a new life on a new continent. The ongoing allure of this country is its familiarity – it seems quite like home, and the dominant language for most of the population is English. Plus, it’s a country enjoying financial prosperity, which makes it easier for Brits to migrate there.

Whilst Canada certainly does resemble the UK in some ways, there are loads of things that are different. Here are 5 things Canadians do differently from the Brits:

1. Diversity

Canada actively welcomes immigrants into the country; in fact multiculturalism is a core Canadian value. It’s also key to national policy making. So diversity isn’t something that politicians just talk about, it’s central to what they do. Currently 40 sitting MPs were born in another country, and all the major cities in Canada encourage a rich ethnic mix.

2. Canadians Tip

It sounds small, but in fact the tipping culture in Canada is a big deal. As in the US, employees in the hospitality sector rely on customers’ tips to make up their wages. Not tipping your waiter is the equivalent of asking him or her to pay to serve you – which isn’t considered acceptable behaviour. Unless you receive dreadful service, you should always tip 15-20% of the bill.

3. Healthcare

Canadian healthcare provision is considered to be one of the best in the world. And, like the NHS, it’s free at the point of use. For newcomers, there’s usually a wait for the provincial health cover to kick in. You’ll need, therefore, to take out private insurance cover for this period. There are a number of insurance companies recommended for this purpose by the Canadian government.

4. Check Your Driving License

It could be that your UK driving license isn’t valid in your new home.  The regulations around the diver’s license are set by provinces, rather than by federal government. This means that agreements with the UK in Vancouver might not be the same as those in Toronto. There’s plenty of guidance on how to manage the complexity, but check it out before you move.

5. Check Out the Weather

Canada’s known for having the same four seasons as the UK, but don’t be fooled. Dependent on where you’re planning to live, you could find yourself dealing with pretty extreme winter temperatures. Plunges to 25ºC are pretty normal in Edmonton, for example. That’s cold like you’ll never have experienced in Britain, so read up on your local climate.
