Guide to Moving to Spain

Schepens Offers a Guide to Moving to Spain

The Brits first fell in love with Spain back in 1972. That’s the date when the package holiday revealed the excitement of replacing the uncertain British summer with sun-drenched Spanish beaches. We’ve been holidaying, exploring, working in and planning for retirement to Spain ever since. Five years ago the numbers of British expats in Spain hit its height at 397,892.

Brexit has had an impact on the prospect of living in Spain. Many Schepens clients who’ve lived there a while tell us that the cost of living has gone up recently. And for those drawing a British pension, the devaluation of the pound has impacted their quality of life. The INE’s migration statistics show that, for the first time in a while, there are more Brits selling up and leaving Spain, than moving to the country.

Schepens is an Expert Moving Company for Spain Removals

We’ve been moving clients to Spain ever since the 1970s and this isn’t the first time that there’s been a drop in the number of Brits making the move. Given that we live in uncertain times though, we thought it might be helpful to offer a post EU Referendum guide to moving to Spain.

1. Spanish Healthcare

The Spanish healthcare system  is one of the best in the world. It’s pretty much free for Spanish residents, with just a small proportion of prescription charges to pay. There’s a private health insurance scheme which around 20% of people use to speed up treatments and gain access to specialist procedures. There is currently uncertainty as to whether expats will continue to have access to public Spanish healthcare once the UK leaves Europe.

2. The British in Spain

One of the attractions for people moving to Spain is that there are lots of expats living out there. In the most popular areas there are whole communities of people who’ve made the move, complete with British bars, restaurants and shops. These are the areas that are being hit hard by the pinch on the pound. Residents have less to spend, which amplifies the sense of a hike in the cost of living.

3. Working in Spain

At one time speaking English in Spain all but guaranteed you a job in the booming tourist industry and its supply chain. This has changed over the past few years. Our clients tell us that speaking Spanish is now a distinct advantage if you want to work in the country. The reason? English is far more widely spoken across Spain now, and jobs are harder to come by.

4. It’s a Great Place to Live

Despite the changes, both in Spain and the UK, the vast majority of our clients tell us that Spain is still a great place to live. The summers are getting longer and there’s still a huge range of different locations to choose to settle in. The food is healthy and good, and the Spanish people are friendly and welcoming. British expats continue to enjoy these benefits, just 2 hours from London.

That’s why we don’t offer ‘standard’ removals packages. Instead, we allocate a dedicated Move Co-ordinator to each client who will work to create a removals plan tailored to their specific requirements.
