Will You Need A Visa?

The entrance requirements of a foreign country should always be your first consideration when thinking of moving abroad. British citizens do not require a visa to enter Sweden and, as citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA), they have the right to work, study and live there without a residence permit for 6 months.

If you are moving for over a year, you will need to register yourself on the Swedish Population Register and apply for a person number, which will become your unique ID for taxation and employment purposes. (It is a bit like our NI number).

To obtain a person number, you will need to be either employed or self employer, studying at an approved institution or have enough funds to support yourself and your family, as well as having your own health care plan in place.

Where Should You Live In Sweden?

This will probably depend upon where you are going to be working. But you will be spoilt for choice as Sweden has some of the most vibrant and eclectic cities in the world.

The capital city of Stockholm is where most young Brits usually find themselves when they first relocate to Sweden. The standard of living in Sweden is very high, and you will find plenty of really good properties to rent in both urban and rural areas.

Housing can be expensive though, especially in Stockholm. The average rent for a 1 bed apartment in the city centre is around 7,000 SEK (£625) a month, and could be as much as 11,550 SEK (£1,000) for a three bedroom property. You may be able to save some money on rent if you look further away from the main residential areas.

Most properties are unfurnished, but will include kitchen appliances. If you want to move your future from the UK, you will need to use a removal company like Schepens , who offer expert home removals for people moving to Sweden from the UK all year round.

Employment In Sweden

The employment market is very buoyant, and there are plenty of innovative start-up companies and large global employers across the country. You may find that you can raise your employment prospects if you can speak conversational Swedish, so it is worth undertaking a Swedish language course before you go.

Qualified professionals are always in demand, especially in industries like construction, architecture, midwifery, biomedical science, civil engineering, podiatry, teaching, medicine and mechanics. You can check out The Local for listings of English-speaking jobs on offer throughout the country.

Is It Expensive To Live In Sweden?

The cost of living in Sweden is quite high, with reasonably high income taxes and a 25% sales tax to contend with too. Wages though, are usually generous enough to help absorb the extra expense, and a there are a lot of benefits like government subsidised childcare schemes that are all helped by your tax contributions.

Your monthly rent will usually account for about a third of your wage packet, transportation costs in the city start from around 26 SEK (£2.30) for a single bus fare and petrol costs around 13.50 SEK (£1.21) a litre. Once again, you may find your Krona goes further if you live away from the major towns and cities.

You can easily find out more about the prices of goods and services in Sweden compared to the UK by looking on the internet for direct comparisons.

Education In Sweden

The Swedes have access to some of the best education in the world. From the tender age of just one year old, children are able to attend subsidised pre-school places and remain there until they turn five. Subsidies will vary according to where you live, and will depend on the employment status of the parents. When they turn six, they enter a Kindergarten class that prepares then for big school.

From the age of seven, all children must attend compulsory schooling consisting of 3 different stages. Lågstadiet (years 1–3), is followed by Mellanstadiet (years 4–6) before they move onto Högstadiet (years 7–9). All children will be expected to remain in this stage of their education until they are 13 years of age.

Gymnasium” or upper secondary school is available for children until the age of 16, and is designed to prepare pupils for university, college or for going straight into employment.

Generally speaking, your little ones should benefit from their time spent within the Swedish school system, as it is focused on not just their educational needs, but also their wellbeing social interaction and personal growth.

“I just wanted to say thank you for organising our move to Sweden. We are yet to unpack everything but was great to have our things delivered the day after my arrival. A very special thanks to Tomas and Liam who delivered.
They worked so hard carrying, sometimes as the rain was pouring down and it was warm and sticky. Both very young men, polite and professional and great advertisers for Schepens. Everyone we’ve been in contact with from Schepens has been very helpful. Best regards from Mona – London to Sweden”
