Denmark Quality of Life

Denmark Comes Second in Global Quality of Life Index 2022

For anyone planning to work or live in Denmark, it’s worth knowing that, for the second year in a row, Denmark has come second in the Numbeo Quality of Life rankings. The calculations are made using 8 indices “purchasing power (including rent), safety, health care, cost of living, property price to income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution, and climate”.

Whilst it’s nice to have the stats, we wondered what kind of impact they have on everyday lived life. Schepens has been providing removals to Denmark for over a century now, so we asked some of our movers to tell us about the Denmark quality of life from their perspective.

1. Denmark is a Very Safe country to Live In

In Denmark you’re safe. You’re so safe it can actually feel a bit boring! You’re highly unlikely to be burgled, if you’re in a car accident it will be dealt with efficiently, should you get ill, the healthcare is excellent or if you lose your job, you’ll have a safety net. The state is committed to supporting Danish citizens from birth to death.

2. Inflation is High, But Under Control

Denmark prides itself on excellent purchasing power, by which I mean the volume of goods and services one unit of currency will purchase. The Danish Krone has made a good recovery after Covid, but inflation has crept up as a result of goods shortages etc. Interest rates are controlling inflation pretty well, and people seem quite optimistic about the future.

3. Denmark is Good for the Planet

Green policies get a lot of airtime in Denmark, and it feels like the government is really serious about embracing sustainable energy. There are strict regulations around home insulation, so most houses are really efficient to heat. And Denmark is about to become the first country to introduce a climate label for foods.

4. Great Healthcare

Denmark spends 10.8% of GDP on healthcare which is high, in comparison with other European countries. It’s free, for the most part, although you have to pays for prescriptions, dentistry and counselling or therapy. Access to healthcare is via a yellow card which you get once you become a citizen. Whenever I’ve used it, I’ve been very impressed with the quality of care and the resources they have.
