COST OF LIVING IN NORWAY

Wondering About the Cost of Living in Norway?

Our movers who are relocating to Oslo for work always worry about the cost of living in Norway. Is it really as expensive as I’ve heard? How much do you need to live there? The Scandinavian countries have long had a reputation for being scarily expensive to visit, so we’ve been doing some research. It may surprise you to know that Mercer’s Annual Cost of Living Survey places Oslo as the 27th most expensive city to live in globally, whilst London comes in at 15th place.

Whilst the big picture tells us it’s not as expensive to live in Oslo as is London, we decided to take a closer look. In this article we work out what costs more than in the UK, what’s similar, and what you’ll pay less for in Norway.

THE COST OF LIVING FOR A RESIDENT

The ongoing scare stories about alcohol prices in Norway, or the cost of a meal out in Oslo, tend to come from visitors to the country. Our clients who have moved to Norway for work tell us that – yes – the prices are a shock to begin with. But once you’ve received your first month’s salary, they don’t look so exorbitant. Wages in Norway are ranked 4th highest in the world, so this has to be taken into account when working out how you’ll manage the cost of living in Norway.

NORWAY FOOD AND DRINK PRICES

There are two reasons why food and drink seem very expensive in Norway. First, a lot of the food consumed is imported, and these items have 12% VAT added. Second, the relatively high wages paid to hospitality employees tend to increase the price of going to a restaurant or drinking in a bar. The cost of your food or drink includes the wages of those serving you.

The duty on alcohol is high in Norway, and the stronger it is the higher the rate. Beer is the least expensive alcohol on offer, so it’s well worth limiting your social drinking to this option. Many Norwegians drive over the border to Sweden to buy cheaper food and there’s a number of Swedish stores conveniently located near the border for this purpose.

BALANCING THE BUDGET IN NORWAY

If you’re planning a move to Norway, you’ll need to take into account the full range of costs and benefits you’ll encounter as a resident:

  • Property Rental in Oslo is 35% lower than in London.
  • Consumer prices in Oslo are 25% higher than in London.
  • Public Transport in Oslo is 30-50% cheaper than in London.
  • Childcare is 80% cheaper in Oslo than in London.
  • Purchases of an electric vehicle are exempted from VAT and purchase tax.
  • Healthcare in Norway is not free, but it is heavily subsidised via taxation. Once a cap of approximately £200pa is reached citizens are exempt from further charges.
