Best Places to Live in Wiltshire

LOOKING FOR THE BEST PLACES TO LIVE IN WILTSHIRE?

Families thinking about quitting London for the countryside rarely put Wiltshire at the top of their wish list. And yet many of the movers we’ve helped to relocate to the country tell us it was love at first sight. So what is it that makes Wiltshire the best kept secret in the south-west? The locals say visitors get dazzled by Stonehenge and don’t notice what else is on offer. In the removals business, however, we regularly hear about the best places to live in Wiltshire from the people we know who’ve moved there.

Schepens has been helping families move to Wiltshire for over a century. We’re a local removals company providing house removals, small moves, and office relocations to locations across the county. We regularly move families from London who looking for a better quality of life, and we also specialise in overseas moves to the UK.

The Schepens team could talk all day about the best places to live in Wiltshire, but we could be considered biased in our views, so we asked some experts to give us their opinions instead. Four of our movers, now happily settled in the county, told us about their nominations for the best places to live in Wiltshire:

MARLBOROUGH – HISTORIC BUT NOT FUSTY

“Spend a few hours in Marlborough and you’re sure to want to stay! It’s a pretty town, perfectly proportioned, and full of historic interest. But if that’s not your thing, it’s packed with independent shops, cafes and restaurants. For walkers, idlers, and hikers there’s the Savernake Forest, and the Ridgeway. There’s no railway station which makes trips to London slightly longer; you can drive in just under 2 hours, or the train takes 2 and a quarter hours.”

MARLBOROUGH – HISTORIC BUT NOT FUSTY

Want to know more? Marlborough is one of two Wiltshire entries in The Sunday Times Best Place to Live guide, for 2023. Here’s what the judges had to say about it:

“Marlborough has excellent schools – state as well as private – beautiful countryside, lively sports clubs, and the widest high street in the country, which is at the heart of life here. An impressive literature festival, a new cinema and standout shops such as the White Horse bookshop and indie record store Sound Knowledge keep it punching above its weight.”

WILTON IN THE NADDER VALLEY

WILTON IN THE NADDER VALLEY

“Most people don’t even know the Nadder Valley exists, which makes living here feel like a bit of a miracle. The A303 runs nearby (the one downside) and it tends to keep all the traffic away from us. The valley blends rolling hills with lush valleys and sumptuous villages. Wilton is a traditional market town just over 3 miles outside Salisbury. On the one hand we have all the shops and amenities we need, on the other, there’s our valley – definitely one of the best places to live in Wiltshire!”

Like the sound of Wilton? In 2022 it was ranked 7th out of 1,372 cities, towns and villages in England and Wales, surveyed by the property finder, Garrington’s. The four categories they focused upon were: quality of living, physical environment, architecture, and heritage, and going green. Wilton scored highest for quality of life and going green.

CHIPPENHAM IS THE PERFECT HUB

“If you’re torn between the Cotswolds, Bath, and Bristol, choose Chippenham. That’s what we did. It’s a nice market town, with pleasant shops and quite a bit going on but – best of all – it’s so easy to get to all the places we love. Houses here are cheaper than the property hotspots all around, and it’s only 1 hour 20 into London!”

I WANT TO KEEP DEVIZES A SECRET

I WANT TO KEEP DEVIZES A SECRET

“I hoped that Devizes would never become ‘the best places to live in Wiltshire’ because I want to keep it as my very own best kept secret. As we don’t have a train station, or any major roads, I can’t see us getting swamped any time soon, so I can keep enjoying the considerable charms of this perfect market town for a while yet.”

The Muddy Stilettos team are in no doubt about Devizes being a great place to live. Here’s what they have to say about it:

“Devizes is a lively market town proud of its indie shops and summer festival scene. The large central market place hosts an actual market on Thursdays, there’s a Farmer’s Market on the first Saturday of the month and the indoor market hall is a beaut. The architecture and proximity to the canal makes it – it’s crammed with over 500 listed buildings from every era, from medieval to Georgian and Victorian. “
