4 Best Places to Live in Devon in 2021
It’s always an exciting moment when the Sunday Times announces their ‘Best Places to Live’ list for the year. Partly because our part of the world (the South West) tends to get quite a few mentions, but also because we check out whether our clients’ best places to live in Devon align with the judges’ decisions. This year they announced that their criteria had changed as a result of the pandemic:
“Our focus for this year has been community, countryside and convenience. It hasn’t been a year for big cities or small villages. Instead it is small towns that have shone: big enough to have everything you need within walking distance and small enough for everyone to feel connected.“
The Schepens Removals team has seen this shift of focus first-hand with people moving to Devon. Lots of families are looking for ways to move out of cities into smaller communities of people. Working from home means that commuter routes are less important to them, although being able to get to London easily is still a factor. All in all, we found that two of our clients ‘best places to live in Devon’ chimed with the judges, whilst the other two in the top four didn’t.
1. Topsham (on the Best Places to Live in Devon List)
We made the move from Exeter to Topsham this year. The town is only 4 miles outside Exeter but it feels like a different world. It sits on a the tranquil estuary and it’s a town made by the people who live there. The High Street hasn’t been gutted by chain coffee shops and brands – because the locals fought to keep the independents. Living here makes you feel like you can make a difference – even if it’s only locally.
2. Sidmouth (not on the list)
Sidmouth was my childhood home, so it’s lovely to be able to return with my children now. We work from home, so suddenly we were no longer chained to commuter towns. Sidmouth is a perfect seaside town. The location is stunning with red cliffs rearing out of the sea, and the beach is lovely, winter and summer. Plenty of shops – chain and independent – and an old-fashioned sense of community.
3. Kingsbridge (on the list)
Close to the sea, busy, but not overrun in the summer. These are a few of the reasons we love Kingsbridge. We have a working town centre, with plenty of family independents, and we’re not swamped with High Street chains. There’s a lovely independent cinema and the residents care about keeping the town the way we want it. A beautiful part of the world to live in, and a perfect spot to bring up a family.
4. Exeter (not on the list)
Having grown up in a large city – Manchester – I couldn’t imagine why you’d want to live in a small city. Until I found Exeter. The great thing about this small city is you’ve got all the good things you want in a city, but you can get out of it in minutes and be in the glorious Devon countryside. There’s great pubs, great shops and it’s pretty much on the sea – what more could you want?
